The nation was shocked by the deaths of Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh, who were shot to death by their mother.

Alex Murdaugh
Alex is a lawyer from Hampton County, South Carolina.
In 1990, he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and a Juris Doctorate degree.
In 1994, Alex was admitted to the South Carolina Bar and had been practicing ever since.
According to Alex’s bio he is known for “representing injured people in all areas of personal injury law, including trucking cases, products liability and wrongful death.”
He is also a part-time prosecutor at the 14th Judicial Circuit.
On September 3, Alex announced that he would be resigning from his family’s law firm and entering rehab.
But, Hampton’s leaders later in the day revealed toThe New York Timesthat Alex was forced out after he was allegedly discovered to have misused money from the company.
The 53 year-old lawyer worked as a partner in Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick, which was established by his great grandfather more than 100-years ago.

“He is no longer associated with PMPED in any manner. His resignation came after the discovery by PMPED that Alex misappropriated funds in violation of PMPED standards and policies.”
The statement added: “A forensic accounting company will be retained for a thorough investigation. PMPED has notified law enforcement and the SC Bar.
“This is disappointing news. We will be handling this issue in a straight forward manner, so rest assured.
“There’s no place in our firm for such behavior. Due to the ongoing investigations into these matters and client confidentiality, PMPED cannot comment further at this time.”
Alex has not yet addressed the allegations made about him by PMPED.
Alex was shot in his head by a South Carolina motorist on September 4, 2021.
Alex said that he was changing his tire on September 4, when he was struck by a vehicle on the Hampton County road.
Jim Griffin, Alex’s lawyer, confirmed the news. He said that Alex was driving to Charleston when he encountered car problems.
The 53-year old was flown to Savannah Hospital, where he was expected that he would survive.
“The Murdaugh family has suffered through more than anyone family could ever imagine. We expect Alex to recover and ask for your privacy while he recovers,”A spokesperson for the family said this in a statement.
Alex made the following statement on September 6, which did not address the shooting: “The murders in my marriage and my son have caused me an incredibly difficult time of my life.”
“I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret. I’m resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders.
“I am immensely sorry to everyone I’ve hurt, including my family, friends and colleagues. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and my relationships.”
A state grand jury met on Thursday, 20 January. IndictedAlex was also charged with 23 additional offences involving stolen funds of millions of dollars.
Alex is indicted in four more cases for attempting to defraud victims of $2,273,959.
He was also charged with 19 additional counts of breaching trust with fraudulent intent and four new computer offenses.
He is currently facing 71 total charges stemming from indictments by the state grand jury.
Alex was charged by a grand jury with two counts for murder and two for possessing a weapon on July 14, 2022.

SLED Chief Mark Keel stated, “Over the past 13 months, SLED agents have worked with our partners to build a strong case against the suspect in the murders of Maggie & Paul. We also excluded those who weren’t.
“At no point did agents lose focus on this investigation. From the beginning I have been clear, the priority was to ensure justice was served. Today is one more step in a long process for justice for Maggie and Paul.”
Maggie Murdaugh
Margaret “Maggie”Kennedy Branstetter Murdaugh was a 1991 graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she met Alex.
On June 7, Maggie, 52, and her son Paul, 22, were found shot dead on the family hunting lodge, known as “Moselle,” in Hampton, South Carolina.
The bodies were found with multiple gunshot wounds yards apart from each other near the family’s dog kennel.
Early forensic investigations suggest that they were killed with two firearms.
Paul Murdaugh
Paul was 22-years-old at the time of his death; however, the younger Murdaugh was awaiting trial for boating under the influence in connection with a 2019 crash that killed Mallory Beach, 19.
According to documents obtained by The Daily MailPaul is said to have been drunken by his alter ego, called “Timmy.”
According to a friend, the 22-year old behaved differently when drunk. Friends decided to give him a new name.
These allegations were made as part of a court deposition in civil litigation against Paul, who was currently awaiting trial for his involvement in Beach’s murder.
Paul was charged with being drunk when he drove a boat in the wake of the fatal crash that claimed Beach’s life.
Beach and five others were reportedly ejected by the boat after Paul crashed into a bridge around 2.20 am on February 24, 2019.
Seven days after the crash, the body of the 19-year old was discovered.
The disposition obtained by The Daily MailIncludes a statement by Anthony Cook, Beach’s boyfriend about Paul’s drunken personality.
“It’s a different name because he turns into a completely, totally different person,”Cook, reportedly.

“So, somebody will say, ‘All right. Here comes Timmy. We got to go.'”
Cook said that Paul was drunk on the night of crash and took his clothes off after an argument.
“He started taking his clothes off during one of the arguments, and it is 40 degrees outside,”He stated.
“I’ve seen him do it a few times when [he gets drunk]. I don’t know why he does that.”
Paul was released after he pled not guilty in May 2019.
He had previously pleaded guilty to multiple felonies related to Beach’s murder.
Buster Murdaugh
Alex and Maggie’s oldest son Richard Alexander Murdaugh Jr. “Buster,”He was not at home when his brother and mother were killed.
