What happens to Sam in Locke & Key season 3?

*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Locke & Key season 3*

Since Locke & Key began airing on Netflix in 2020, the enthralling supernatural series has introduced fans to a host of weird and wonderful characters.

However, over the course of three seasons, it can be easy to forget a few faces here and there, especially if they aren’t always at the forefront of the action.

For many fans, the character of Sam Lesser is one whose past on Locke & Key has become a little foggy, meaning a recap is in order.

Who is Sam in Locke & Key?

Played by Thomas Mitchell Barnet, Sam Lesser began his time in Locke & Key as a student at Matheson Academy and was a close friend of Tyler Locke.

Sam was a tough kid and suffered from constant pain at the hands his abusive father Randy. This resulted in Sam developing a personality disorder.

Sam brought his home life with him, which made it difficult to form stable relationships. This made Sam the perfect target for Dodge to manipulate.

Dodge persuaded Sam that she would help her steal the magical keys from Lockes. But when Rendell Locke refused any information, Sam shot and killed Rendell Locke.

With Dodge’s help, Sam managed to escape from prison using the Matchstick Key and once he was free, he headed back to Keyhouse to attack the Lockes again.

How he became ghostly

Sam’s next attempt to take the keys from the Lockes proved to be fatal for him.

Despite being blocked by the Lockes, Sam eventually managed to obtain the Head Key. However, Dodge arrived on the scene to seize the key.

However, Sam can’t decide whether to give her the key or not and so she takes the choice away from him by stabbing him and leaving him wounded.

When the police arrive on the scene, Sam attempts to flee through an open door, not realising that it’s the Ghost Door. He is trapped in his own body and is prevented from returning to it by the police.

But Sam’s new circumstances are a huge turning point for his character as he feels a huge amount of guilt for what he’s done and sets out to make amends after realising that Dodge had been manipulating him all along.

In season 2, Dodge (masquerading as Gabe) uses the Ghost Key to talk to Chamberlain Locke about creating a new key and Sam attempts to use this opportunity to sneak into Dodge’s body and leave her trapped as a ghost instead. Dodge, however, proves too strong to resist and reclaims the body.

Later in the season Sam is able to help Kinsey, Scot and Scot find The Angel Key. This would prove vital in defeating Dodge.

What happens to Sam in season three?

Season 3 of Locke & Key sees Sam’s redemption arc come to a conclusion.

Bode is trapped in a ghost state by playing with Timeshift Key. Sam assists Locke to get back into the real world.

Bode is initially distrustful of Sam after what he did to Rendell but he begins to see Sam in a different light as it’s clear he’s trying to atone.

Sam finally manages to escape the Ghost Door and get back into the real world by hijacking the body of Bolton, one of Captain Gideon’s colonial henchmen as they attempt to steal the keys from the Lockes.

Masquerading as Bolton, Sam helps the Lockes track down Gordie Shaw, an old friend of Rendell, Nina and Ellie’s, who has the Creation Key secretly stored deep within his mind.

Gideon, however, stabs Gordie. This means that the world that makes his mind up slowly begins to crumble while the Lockes remain inside.

Sam makes a final act of redemption and gives himself up so that the Lockes may escape in a flash.

Season 3 Locke and Key season 3 is now available for streaming Netflix After release on August 10, 2022.
