What does Last Seen in WhatsApp mean?
These days, you can no longer ignore messages that pop up in your app.
Simply put, Last seen is the way the messaging app informs you of the last time that someone used their service.
This feature allows you to see when your Whatsapp contacts last used the app and if they are online at the moment.
You can control who can view your last online time and who you see it in the privacy settings.
You may notice the message “last seen” and the time underneath someone’s name when you have a conversation with them on Whatsapp.
If they opened the app within the past 24hrs, you’ll see the exact time and date they used it.
Whatsapp can also tell you when someone is writing a message to you and when they are online.
The FAQ states that sometimes people will not be able to see the contact’s last known location. This may occur for one of several reasons.
- You might have changed your privacy settings to hide this information
- Your privacy settings might be set to hide your last seen. You cannot see the profiles of others if you don’t share yours.
- Your access may have been denied
- It is possible that you have not had a conversation with them before.
- They might not have you saved as contact
How to turn off Last seen
Don’t be afraid if you find this update frightening. Meta, the company now controlling Whatsapp, revealed three privacy-focused new features in August 2022.
One of the new features is that users now have the ability to select specific contacts from their contact list, who can view when they were last seen.
To disable your last seen, you can go to your settings in Whatsapp.
- Android: Tap more options > Settings > Privacy
- iPhone: Tap the settings icon in the bottom right corner > Account > privacy
- Desktop: Click menu > settings > privacy
Once you are inside your privacy settings you should see ‘Last Seen & Online’.
Once you have selected that option, your screen will display the different options for who can view your ‘last seen status’ – even nobody.
Depending on which settings you choose, you can modify your settings to make sure that only your chosen contacts know when you last used this app.
