Spy x Family: What breed of dog is it?

Whilst never technically stated in Tatsuya Endo’s original manga series, the dog in Spy x Family is widely considered to be a Pyrenean Mountain Dog – also It is knownAs a Great Pyrenees.

This breed is considered to be the closest to Spy x Family’s character design. It is large in stature, has thick, white-coloured fur and often has black paws.

Pyrenean Mountain Dogs come from France and are closely related to the Spanish Pyrenean Mastiff.

This breed is primarily used to protect livestock from bears and wolves.

Minor spoiler: Anya names the dog on Spy x Family ‘Bond’Because of her association to the cartoon character ‘Bondman’. In reference to the bow ties worn by James Bond spy, she would give Bond a black bowtie instead of a dog collar.

What are the powers of the Bond dog?

Aya named Bond the Spy x Family dog after Bond. He has the power to precognition which allows him to temporarily see fluttering future visions.

These visions could be as simple as being in one’s immediate environment to being somewhere else.

He also has a strong sense of smell (more so than a regular dog in the series) and has basic combat training – although this is to be shown in an upcoming anime episode.

These powers result from Bond’s status as Subject 8 in Project Apple’s research operation, which was conducted by the Ostania government.

Bond was subject to extreme abuse by the researchers. He was often electrocuted with high-voltage shocks and was fed disgusting food.

According to Spy x Family, this is quite interesting Fandom page, the terrorist operation that introduced Bond was loosely based on the Soviet Army’s Anti-tank dog program from World War 2.

These dogs were trained to transport explosives beneath German tanks. The Soviets would then detonate them.

Tragically, tens of thousands of dogs were killed in this plan, which often resulted in the canines becoming scared of German tanks and running back to the Soviet trenches – killing the same soldiers who trained them.
