“West Side Story” Generates Early Oscar Buzz: Reboot of Beloved Films and Plays Hits the Silver Screen

The highly anticipated “West Side Story”The film premiered Monday in New York City and was praised by many who saw it.

It is so beautifully shot and staged, such an absolute schooling of the usual musical directors, that I fear I now want [director Steven Spielberg] to make two or three more,” wrote film writer Jesse Hassenger.

“It was amazing,”Joanna Robinson, Ringer’s writer, posted a tweet.

“Sometimes when a film is that beloved like the original ‘West Side Story’ you go, ‘can lightning strike twice?’ Well, lightning has struck twice,” Nikki, a Fandango correspondent Novak spoke to Inside Edition.

With a few hundred entertainment journalists, I attended the New York City premiere screening at a Chelsea movie theater. Since the announcement of a remake three years ago, I have been following closely this movie. Even went to the theater to see it. SetsIt was built in Paterson (New Jersey) when it was still open to the public before filming. Spielberg, uptown at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, paid tribute to Stephen Sondheim (lyricist for the film), who died 4 days earlier at 91.

The film marks Spielberg’s movie-musical directorial debut and hits theaters on Dec. 10. Tony Kushner, the screenwriter, adapted the script to expand on the characters and add more depth. There’s new dialogue, as well as nods to well-known lines from the original.

“This is probably one of the most intimidating projects I’ve ever taken on…and a little crazy to take a masterpiece of theater which has already been turned into a masterpiece of cinema and try to do it through your different eyes and different sensibility,”Spielberg stated in “West Side Story: The Making of the Steven Spielberg Film,”Laurent Bouzereau’s new book is now available.

“West Side Story”The film stars Ansel Elgort playing Tony and Rachel Zegler (20 years old) as Maria. It is based upon the 1957 stage adaptation. Zegler was among the 30,000 women who applied for the role. After a year of auditions, screen tests and screenings, Spielberg offered Zegler the role in January 2019. At the time, she was just 17 years old.

Zegler performed despite the fact that she was heading for the big screen with her first professional acting gig. ThatJahr in her highschool musical production “Shrek.”Ansel Elgort, Zegler’s co-star, was present in the audience. Zegler took her senior year off before her last bow. She skipped her senior prom and began work on the film.

“I can’t wait to see Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose’s careers explode after this. They knock it out of the park as Maria and Anita in this beautiful crafted movie,” Write Nora Dominick.

There’s also early buzz for Ariana DeBose aRita Moreno, who played Anita in 1962’s Oscar-winning film, and Valentina Moreno, who plays Valentina, play the role. It’s a new role in the film and takes the place of Doc, the drug store proprietor. In this adaptation, Moreno plays Doc’s widow, who runs the drug store where many of the film’s scenes take place.

Moreno, the first Latina woman to win Best Supporting Actress, was Anita’s portrayal. She made headlines in 2018 when she wore her gown again to the Academy Awards.

It would be incredible to see this woman who is about to turn 90 to win an Oscar for West Side Story. It’s never happened. It would be unprecedented and it’s so deserved,” Novak also added.
