Our holiday to Cuba was the best of our lives. Unfortunately, we lost our luggage at the airport. We didn’t receive it back for two weeks.

After a couple left their luggage behind for a fortnight, a dream holiday turned into a nightmare.

John and Karen Wildman, from Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, had been looking forward to a trip of a lifetime in Varadero, Cuba, in July.

They forked out £6,000 for the two-week stay at the four star Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa and their flights to Havana with Air France.

They were then left with nothing when they arrived in the Caribbean because of baggage issues at Edinburgh Airport.

John, 77, said: “What they did to us was inhumane.

“Air France should have never let the flight depart on July 2 when they knew they couldn’t handle the journey.

“It’s unacceptable and criminal, I would have rather had the holiday cancelled than go through this.”

While the Cumbernauld couple was able to carry only a few clothes in their luggage, they were generously assisted by locals with sunscreen, phone chargers, and hair bushes.

John, 53, and Karen, 53, were unable to obtain toiletries because of difficulties with supplies on the Island.

John said he contacted Air France’s customer service to trace their bags but the airline did not provide any temporary solution.

They were finally reunited with their luggage just three hours before they flew home.

He said: “At the end of this holiday I’m out of pocket and stressed.
“I spent $320 on taxis to go back and forth from the airport to find our bags.

“We didn’t have our mosquito spray among other things and Karen had to see a doctor after being bitten 24 times.

“That was another $60 for the appointment, plus $20 for tablets and an injection.

“Our airline showed no care of duty.”

Air France was reached for comment.
