Today’s update indicates that 16,047,716 people in Britain have contracted the bug.

Unfortunately, there were 439 more deaths today after a positive test. This is an increase on yesterday’s 56 deaths. Monday’s data was always behind because of the weekend.

Another positive sign that the country has surpassed the Omicron wave peak is the fall in infections since two weeks ago.

The infection rate is also lower today than it was on Christmas Eve when 122186 people tested positive.

Although Covid isn’t a mild condition, many people who have experienced it say it’s “just like a common cold.”

A string of hugely positive studies show Omicron is milder than other strains in the vaccinated, with the first official UK report revealing the risk of hospitalisation is 50 to 70 per cent lower than with Delta.

Health officials repeatedly stated that Omicron booster jabs are effective in protecting against covid and give the best chance of surviving the pandemic.

Although infection rates have declined across the country, some areas have seen an increase in cases over the last week.

A cluster of infections has emerged in Northern Ireland as the government decides to reopen nightclubs later this week.

Newry, Mourne & Down in Northern Ireland has the highest rate in the UK, with 3,451 new cases in the seven days to January 20 – the equivalent of 1,899.6 per 100,000 people.

This is an increase from the 1,411.9 rate for the seven days prior to January 13.

Experts from the World Health Organisation now believe that there are four types of Omicron.

The mutant variant of the gene has been able to develop a number separate lines since its appearance in late 2013.

This is not surprising as it is a typical pattern for viruses. Delta was split into over 200 subvariants before Omicron took control.

Many strains of cannabis are identical to the originals, which means that they do not have any extra effect on immunity or severity.

This comes just days after it was revealed that thousands could have access at home to life-saving coronavirus medicines.

Although vaccines are key to the defeat of coronaviruses, antivirals also play an important role.

British citizens over 50 years old are urged to enroll in the anti-viral trial to ensure that life-saving medication can be delivered faster.

Antivirals protect those most in need from being admitted to hospital. Charities such as Kidney Care UK (Cystic Fibrosis Trust), Diabetes UK (Diabetes UK) and the British Liver Trust have supported the effort to get Brits involved in the study.
