Trailer: DMX Readapts to Life After Jail

The new trailer for the documentary shows how DMX tries his best to reclaim both his life and work after he is released from prison for tax fraud. DMX: Don’t Try to UnderstandOn Thursday, Nov. 25, HBO Max will broadcast a new episode of, which will air on television.

Shot after DMX was released from prison in January 2019, the film follows the rapper as he returns to the road and tries to reconnect with family and friends as one of rap’s inspirational elder statesmen. DMX’s “Dancing with the Stars” is just one of his many efforts to spread his messages. “the gospel according to X,”DMX is also faced with all kinds of problems, from business to family, and long-standing issues like addiction.

The rapper’s perseverance and drive, however, is clear when he tells a crowd at a show, “You might not know or think that you’re special to God, because you’ve been through difficult situations. But I’m here to tell you, that’s why you’re special to God.”

It appears, according to a release earlier in the month Don’t Try to Understand will primarily focus on just the year in DMX’s life after prison. After suffering a heart attack a week earlier, the rapper died on April 20, 2021.

Don’t Try to Understand was directed by Christopher Frierson and is part of HBO’s Music BoxSeries, executive produced by Bill Simmons. The series has also featured documentaries on Woodstock ’99 and Alanis Morissette, while upcoming projects will focus on Juice WRLD, Kenny G, and the influential music manager Robert Stigwood.
