One of the biggest Netflix movies in the world at the moment is a period-piece adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson, that’s garnered a flood of negative press from critics who think the movie’s fourth-wall-breaking and modern-sounding lines have no place in an Austen story.
Indeed, one of the movie’s Rotten TomatoesScores is definitely in “yikes”territory scored an awful 31 percent by critics. The audience score, meanwhile, is much better — 65 percent, albeit still not great. What’s even better? All things considered, the movie fulfilled its purpose. It reeled in the viewership — 28.7 million hours viewed globally for the week that ended July 17.
This is according to Netflix’s somewhat fuzzy definition of what constitutes a view. But it was enough to make PersuasionOne of The Top 10 Netflix movies in the world — bested, for the time being, by only one title.
The Sea Beast is Netflix’s biggest movie
According to the streaming site’s weekly chart of top Netflix movies published Tuesday, July 19, a family-friendly animated movie is the current #1 movie. The Sea Beast. It was released on July 8th and has been viewed more than 68,000,000 times worldwide in the past week.
It felt a little like this one came out of nowhere since there wasn’t exactly a huge marketing push to get the word out. However, enough Netflix users liked it so much that they sent Chris Williams’ gem rocketing up the Netflix movie charts.
