Kidney stones are masses made of salt and minerals, and can be anywhere between a grain of salt and a golf ball in size.

There are many types of calcium stones: struvite and uric acid stone, as well as cystine and struvite.

Many people suffering from kidney stones find it extremely painful and claim that they will never forget it.

The stones can cause severe pain. Most of them pass through the ureter, the tube connecting the bladder and the kidney. However, some may need to be surgically removed.

Dr Rajan said that kidney stones are a common problem in 10 percent of patients.

He explained how you can avoid this condition.

He stated that low calcium could cause kidney stones.

“Calcium must be absorbed into the body through diet before it can bind with oxalates in the stomach and intestines.

“Eating foods with calcium is a good way for oxalates to leave the body and not form stones.”

STEER CLEAR

Some foods contain oxyalate. It is also a waste product.

He advised, “Don’t get too salty.” Too much salt can cause kidney stones by preventing calcium from being absorbed.

“Animal proteins contain purines, and eating too much can cause uric acid to build up in your urine, increasing the risk of stones.”

Although meat is an excellent source of protein, there are many other options.

Protein-rich foods such as eggs, dairy products and meats are great sources.

Foods like seitan and tempeh are great sources of protein if you’re vegan.

A doctor at the NHS also stated that genetics and family history may make it more likely for people to develop kidney stones.
