West Side Story

The studios and networks that won the Golden Globes would usually be running ads celebrating their wins, but few will pay much attention to the winners in the coming weeks. Some of the same films and people may well win Oscars on March 27, but the Globes’ influence on that show, which is minimal in the best of times, will be all but nonexistent this year.

After being exposed by the, the awards ceremony was criticized for its open bar policy and relaxed atmosphere. Los Angeles TimesThe HFPA revealed a history involving self-dealing, and paid its members almost $2 million to serve on various committees.

In the LA Times report, many actors and filmmakers criticized the HFPA for not having Black members. It also snubbed acclaimed TV shows made by people of color and asked insensitive questions at lavish press junkets organized by studios to win Golden Globe recognition.

West Side Story

Due to the backlash, more than 100k PR firms signed a joint statement last year announcing a boycott for the HFPA unless changes are made by NBC The company has cancelled all plans to broadcast this year’s Golden Globes, leaving open the possibility of resuming the broadcast in 2023. Since then, 21 members have been added to the HFPA, six of which are Black.
