Over the past two weekends in limited release, Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson has posted better numbers than Focus Features’ “Tár” but well short of McDonagh’s 2017 Oscar winner “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”This trend has continued. “Inisherin”Beat the $1,000,000 total won last weekend “Tár”It was a total of 1,095 theaters and accounted for roughly half the $4.4 million in 3-day grossing. “Three Billboards”Earned from 614 theaters during Thanksgiving weekend
It is not surprising that such a result was possible because arthouses survived the COVID-19 pandemic to bring audiences back into theaters to see challenging and critically acclaimed fare. As the weeks go by, this challenge will only become more challenging. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” arrives with a much more dramatic tone than most of its Marvel brethren, though films like Universal’s “The Fabelmans”We will offer a greater variety of mature films to our audiences. “Banshees of Inisherin”It continues to expand by focusing its efforts on slow-burning word–of-mouth.
Just behind “Inisherin” on the box office charts is UA/Orion’s “Till,”The film grossed $1.8 Million from 2,136 theaters, making it $6.5M after four weekends in theaters. Focus Features also expanded James Gray’s “Armageddon Time”The 1,006 theaters had very disappointing results. They grossed just $810,000, an average per-theater $802, and a total running of $902,000. “Tár,”In its fifth weekend, the total of $670,000 in additional theaters was reached from 1,090 theaters, bringing it to $3.7million.
