It’s a busy weekend for the indie box office, but not a particularly profitable one, as UA/Orion’s “Till” and Focus Features’ “Tár”Wide release numbers have shown tepid results.
“Till”After expanding to 2,058 theaters it is now sixth in the box office charts. It has just $2.8million per-theater and an annual total of $3.6million.
The good news for Chinonye Chukwu’s true-story drama about the murder of Emmett Till is that critical and audience praise has been overwhelming, with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and an A+ on CinemaScore. Danielle Deadwyler has received Oscar buzz for her lead performance as Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, and United Artists is still holding on to hope that the strong word of mouth will attract more audiences despite the film’s challenging themes and imagery.
“Tár”There was a smaller expansion to 1,058 theatres. The film grossed just above $1 million, with an average of $938 per theater and a total of $2.5million. Although Cate Blanchett is the lead actress, she has received widespread acclaim as well as audience buzz. “Tár”It is an arthouse film in its truest form, with thought-provoking explorations on cancel culture and power abuse. These numbers also show how difficult it was to gain theatrical momentum for these films even with the strong momentum from Venice Film Festival.
Focus Features are also available in limited edition “Armageddon Time,” a semi-autobiographical drama from director James Gray that stars Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins alongside young stars Banks Repeta and Jaylin Webb. The film was released in six theaters across New York and Los Angeles. It grossed $72,000 on an average of $12,000.
The live event, which was only available in theaters for one day, was also shown in the cinemas. “Coldplay: Music of the Spheres,” a broadcast of the British rock band’s concert in Buenos Aires. The concert film was shown in 833 theaters by Trafalgar Releasing. It earned $1,224 on average.
