Michael Henry, who is running for New York State Attorney-General, confirmed the attack via a tweet.

“Tonight a criminal jumped tried to stab my ticket-mate gubernatorial candidate, @leezeldin as he spoke about disastrous bail reform,”Henry wrote.

Zeldin was a republican candidate to New York State Governor. He gave a speech just before the attack.

Witnesses were questioned Pix11 that the alleged attacker “wrestled with him a bit, and pulled a blade out.”

According to Zeldin’s campaign team, the congressman then grabbed the attacker’s hand to keep him away until others came to his aid.

Zeldin was then taken into custody by police.

Katie Vincentz (Speaker for Zeldin) stated: “Congressman Zildin, Alison Esposito, and all members of Team Zeldin are safe following tonight’s attack.

“Far more must be done to make New York safe again. This is very much getting out of hand in this state.”

Kathy Hochul, the current Governor of New York, and Zeldin’s opponent, stated on Twitter: “My Team has informed me about an incident at Lee Zeldin’s campaign event tonight.

“Relieved and relieved to learn that Congressman Zeldin is not in serious harm’s way, and that the suspect has been taken into custody.

“I condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible — it has no place in New York.”

Central Recorder reached to the police for comment, but no response was received by publication.

Vincentz had more words of wisdom on crime control “Unfortunately, Congressman Zeldin is just the latest New Yorker whose life has been affected by the out of control crime and violence in New York.”

“This needs to stop! Thankfully, we still have exceptional men and women in law enforcement answering the call to protect our streets.”
