Super Bowl Champion Linebacker: His 'Playing Days Have Ended'

Clay Matthews, a former NFL linebacker who was a Super Bowl winner, has announced his retirement unofficially. Clay Matthews, who was with the Green Bay Packers for 11 seasons, has announced his retirement. Recently told Packers Wirethat he’s done playing football. Matthews last played football in 2019, when he was with the Los Angeles Rams.

“My playing days are over,”Matthews said Packers WireMatthews was a top-ranked linebacker in the NFL during his time with the Packers. Matthews immediately made an impact when he was picked by Green Bay as the first rounder in the 2009 NFL Draft. Matthews recorded 51 tackles and 17 tackles for losses, along with 10 sacks. Matthews’ performance on the field was instrumental in helping the Packers win their fourth Super Bowl title and the 13th NFL championship. Matthews would record 83.5 sacks during his 10 seasons playing for the Packers. He was also named to both the All-Pro and Pro Bowl teams six times.

Matthews signed a 2-year contract with Los Angeles Rams in March 2019. He had 37 tackles, nine tackles for loss and eight sacks over 13 games. He was released by the Rams in March 2020 and remained a free agent event since. “I had a few other offers after for the 2020 season, but we had just moved to LA, and we had just had our third child, and it was the middle of COVID, so there were a lot of unknowns,” Matthews said. “Ultimately, there wasn’t a situation out there that made me want to relocate the family again. I wanted to focus on the next chapter, which is being a dad and being home a lot more.”

Matthews is the Packers official leader in sacks. Bags were officially made an official stat by 1982. In an interview with ESPNMatthews stated that he was looking forward to saying something in Green Bay. He knew that they were moving on from him when they signed Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith in free agency prior to the 2019 season.

“I would have loved to finish my career there,” Matthews said.”Based on my discussions after that 2018 season, I thought we were going to continue moving forward. But yeah the manner in which it did kinda caught me by surprise. Ultimately it is what it is. I had fun in my year in L.A. It was a blast getting to go home and play with some incredible players.”
