A RECENT rainy Monday morning proved to be the perfect time to be transported to what felt like another world for my first-ever spa facial. World Spa, located in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, draws upon global influences to bring visitors an array of relaxing experiences.

Upon arrival at World Spa, I completed the typical check-in process and received a wristband linked to my assigned locker. The locker could only be opened with my personal wristband, which was a nice touch and felt very hi-tech – and safe. I was provided with a robe, towels, and slippers for the duration of my stay. Recommended attire is a bathing suit.

Unwind in an Oasis of Cultural Healing

World Spa had a comfortable locker room and dark, quiet individual treatment facilities. The hallways on the lower levels were adorned with paintings and press clips. The upper level was home to the restaurant, pool area, and the spa itself.

Indulge in Exploratory Treatments

Each experience in the spa is influenced by a different culture, including the Grand Banya and Turkish Hammam. World Spa also offers the Venik Platza, a traditional Russian treatment in a heated room involving gentle lashes of the back, loin, thighs, calves, and feet with a bundle of leafy twigs and branches. This treatment combines the healing power of eucalyptus and birch or oak tree twigs with the heat of a Russian steam room for optimal healing.

Embark on the World Spa Signature Facial Journey

A religious experience. That’s the best way I can describe my first-ever spa facial. My practitioner for the World Spa Signature facial was Nina, who helped create the service. The treatment involved different cleansers and masques, plus steam heat and hot towels.

Immerse Yourself in the Spa Experience

With over a dozen experiences to choose from, I couldn’t wait to access the spa area. I started my post-facial spa experience in the Event Sauna and spent about 10 minutes warming up there. The space is designed for larger groups to enjoy the dry heat of a traditional Finnish sauna together.

Relax and Rejuvenate with Hot & Cold Plunges

I decided to explore the pool area, which included hydrotherapy, vitality, and onsen pools – plus a cold plunge. While this wasn’t a particularly calming experience, it was still enjoyable. I opted to spend time in the onsen area, alternating between 52-degree and 101-degree pools, which benefits the metabolism, immune system, and muscle tension and fatigue.

Final Moments of Bliss

To cap off my time in the spa area, I ventured to the Moroccan Hammam and Aroma Sauna. The Moroccan Hammam was beautifully designed to provide an authentic Marrakesh bathhouse experience. My final few minutes were spent in the Aroma Sauna, boasting a woody, spicy scent that was very inviting. After a hot shower and some regrouping, I made the trip back home feeling content and grateful to have been transported for a short while.
