Sidney Poitier was a long-standing actor who made history numerous times. He became famous during the Civil Rights movement’s height. He also made films that were social commentary, and became an inspiring voice for justice and equality. As the first Black actor to win a Best Actor trophy at the Academy Awards in 1964, he inspired countless other actors who came after him – as evidenced by Oscar winner Denzel Washington’s own Acceptance speech almost 40 years later.
