We are not able to put into words the profound sadness and loss that we feel at this moment. We are grateful that he was able spend his final day with his loved ones. Sidney Poitier was more than a brilliant actor and activist. He was also an adoring father and husband who was supportive and kind. He is our lighthouse, who lights up our lives with infinite love. His smile was healing and his warm hugs were the best refuge. His laughter was infectious. We could always count on him for wisdom and comfort, and his departure feels like a big hole in our families and hearts. His beautiful soul will guide and inspire us, even though he is no more with us here in this world. He will live on in us, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren—in every belly laugh, every curious inquiry, every act of compassion and kindness. His incredible work and humanity will continue to inspire the world.
Sidney Poitier was a long-standing actor who made history numerous times. He became famous during the Civil Rights movement’s height. He also made films that were social commentary, and became an inspiring voice for justice and equality. As the first Black actor to win a Best Actor trophy at the Academy Awards in 1964, he inspired countless other actors who came after him – as evidenced by Oscar winner Denzel Washington’s own Acceptance speech almost 40 years later.
His family’s words really capture what the actor meant to them, as well as so many people in the public. The actor’s extended family took the time to express their gratitude for fans’ support and love. They went on:

Joanna Shimkus, Sidney Poitier’s wife, and six of their children are his survivors. Although his loss is a difficult one for many, we can take comfort knowing that we were able to enjoy his brilliant performances as well as his keen social activism for as long time as we did.
