Samantha Cristoforetti: Who are you? The International Space Station’s female astronaut is about to take command

Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, an Italian astronaut, will soon be Commander of the International Space Station.

Cristoforetti will be the first European woman to command ISS on September 28th in an official ceremony

The ISS, an international low-orbit research laboratory floating around Earth, is a low orbit satellite.

Samantha Cristoforetti is who?

Cristoforetti, a 45-year old astronaut at the European Space Agency (ESA), is here.

She was born in Milan, Italy in 1977 but was raised in a small village called Malè – located near the Alps.

Before joining the Italian Air Force, the astronaut studied both science as well as mechanical engineering.

After obtaining her qualification as war pilot, she was appointed Captain of the Italian Air Force.

Her time at the ESA

Cristoforetti was chosen by the European Space Agency as an astronaut in 2009.

Five years later she was on her first mission to space as an astronaut.

In 2019, she became an internet sensation when she broke the record for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight of a woman.

Astronaut Cristoforetti returned home to Earth after spending a total 199 days (16 hours) in space.

What are her plans for the future?

Cristoforetti is currently on her second mission to the ISS.

Minerva, the mission’s name, is intended to last six months, from April through October 2022.

Bob, a Nasa astronaut, is with her “Farmer”Hines, Kjell and Jessica Lindgren.

Cristoforetti will serve as a mission specialist during the flight to and fro the ISS. ESA noted.

How about her new job?

Cristoforetti will assume the role of ISS Commander, replacing Oleg Artemyev.

Cristoforetti will serve as station commander and be responsible for all work done by the crews.

This includes many scientific experiments in a zero-gravity setting.
