Salman Rushdie on the New York Stage

UPDATED MondayAccording to the Associated Press, the Iranian government denied any involvement in the attack against Salman Rushdie.

Nasser Kanaani, a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said in a briefing to journalists on Monday: “We, in the incident of the attack on Salman Rushdie in the U.S., do not consider that anyone deserves blame and accusations except him and his supporters. Nobody has right to accuse Iran in this regard.”

“Following the attack on Friday, my father remains in critical condition in hospital receiving extensive ongoing medical treatment. We are extremely relieved that yesterday he was taken off the ventilator and additional oxygen and he was able to say a few words,”According to the statement.

Earlier:New York State Police issued the following statement: “On August 12 2022, at about 11am, a male suspect ran up on to the stage and attacked Rushdie and an interviewer. Rushdie suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck, and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition is not yet known.”

“The interviewer suffered a minor head injury. A State Trooper assigned to the event immediately took the suspect into custody. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. More information will be released when it is available,”The statement was added.

Hadi Matar, 24, was identified as the suspect in New Jersey.

Rushdie was scheduled for a lecture at Chautauqua Institute. Following the incident, the audience was evacuated.
