Rihanna’s Lift Me Up dropped with the release of Wakanda Forever and the meaning behind the lyrics pays a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.
RiRi’s first music in six years is finally here as she’s collaborated to create the lead single for the upcoming Marvel movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and it’s everything her fans could want and more.
But the whole song is more than the star’s return to the spotlight – it’s a touching tribute to the late Black Panther star who sadly passed away in 2020 from cancer.

Rihanna wrote the track with Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems, Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (who composed the original score of both Black Panther and its second instalment) and with the film’s director Ryan Coogler.
In a Statement, Tems said: “After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life.
“I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

When RiRi sings the lyrics, she talks about a deep loss. “drowning in an endless sea”And “burning in a hopeless dream”.
And then, when she sings “Hold me when you go to sleep / Keep me in the warmth of your love”It seems she is referencing Boseman’s death by using the metaphor sleep to refer to his passing.
The tears-jerking lines “When you depart, keep me safe / Safe and sound”Reflect on the journey between life and death, and how someone looks over the bereaved.
The line is in the second verse. “Take some time and stay with me/ Keep me in the strength of your arms”Asking and wishing for someone to stay is a good thing.
Boseman is loved by the entire song, and he is missed.
