‘Queens’ Boss On Brianna’s Fate, Its Impact On ABC Series & Whether Eve Would Return

Spoiler Alert: The forthcoming story reveals major plot points from tonight’s episode of ABC’s Queens.

ABC’s Queens revealed Brianna’s (Eve) fate in Tuesday night’s episode titled “Bars,”But fans had to wait until the very end to see that she was not only alive, but thriving.

To recap the events that led to Brianna’s life hanging in the balance, Jill’s (Naturi Naughton) ex-husband Darren (Emerson Brooks)) shot Brianna and Eric (Taylor Selé) leaving them for dead. Both men beat the odds, and Eric tried to re-enter this world as a better father and man, but Brianna used her near-death experience to decide to leave.

Brianna faked her own death with the help of Jill, Eric and Naomi (Brandy Norwood), Valeria, Nadie Velazquez, and Lil Muffin. Brianna is seen in paradise at the end of episode 109. She is lounging on the beach of Piedras Blancas—where she and her late husband Jeff honeymooned—alongside their children.

Deadline exclusively revealed that Eve would be on maternity leaves from QueensAs she prepared for her first child, Maximillion Cooper was with her in November. Although it is not yet clear if Eve will be returning to the series, series creator Zahir McGhee is optimistic.

McGhee spoke to Deadline about Brianna’s fate and what it means for the rest of the season for the Queens.

DEADLINE – You kept viewers guessing right up to the very end! What made Brianna visit Piedras Blancas, you ask?

ZAHIR MCGEEThis was done in episode 7. Jeff left the video for her. He told her about their honeymoon in Piedra Blancas, and reminded him of his promise to take their children there. She was true to her word. She had surgery and was able to say, “I am going to keep that promise.” ‘F this. I don’It’s not necessary. I’m gonna do what Jeff and I said we were going to do.’ It’s kind of an homage to her marriage and a final bit of healing after all that she’s gone through. At the end of the episode after they form Nasty Girl Records—which is a very exciting thing for us and them—when Naomi says, ‘There’s one more person we can call.’ They know where she is and they’ve been in contact with her.

Is there any plan for Eve to return home?

Eve found out she was pregnant and we were thrilled for her. I was just having a baby. I didn’t know what she planned for the show, but instinctively I asked if she wanted Brianna to be pregnant. That’s when she told me she didn’t and that she had a date set to leave. Cast and crew wanted her to have this amazing time. As you will see in episode 9, we will build the story and she will be present in the minds our characters. Since the beginning, she’s been Queens’ third partner and she’s in this for as long as she wants to be in it.

Did she shoot this final scene or are there other scenes that you can use in future seasons?

There are things that we left on the floor… If you think about our show, we exist in many timelines. We opened the third timeline from 1993, when the couple first met, in the finale of the season. We were saying about episode 9, that it wouldn’t matter if Brianna had died. There is a show that she could still appear on 100 episodes, regardless of her death. You might see Eve before the season’s end. One thing I can tell you is that Eve will be present in your life, and that we have something for you in the finale.

Jill was carrying a heavy burden and is suffering from PTSD. She was looking for drugs to help her cope. What’s up next for her?

Jill’s been going through a lot on a personal scale which has forced her to look into a mirror in a way that the others have not. Similar to the pilot, they’re all going in separate directions and trying to figure themselves out and what their next steps are. So we’re going to have these separate stories for them then bring them back together.

I think the show is best when it’s operatic high drama and fun, like when there’s music and laughter and fun. We will deal with Jill’s inner problems that cause her to go to that place, but I don’t think we’re going to dig too deeply into the drugs after this episode.

Are we seeing the end of Darren?

He might be gone from our show, but that situation isn’t gone. We saw him being knocked to the ground and then arrested. There’s going to be a trial but I’m not saying we’re going to live in his trial. That story, and how it affected her, is not over. We may not be able to focus on PTSD or the use of drugs, but feelings and guilt are still there.

In episode 10, we have a guest star who plays her deacon father. We will learn more about his backstory and why Jill is what she is.

Valeria is experiencing so much fast, that she leaves and marries Thomas (Gaius Charles). Are his intentions good?

We wanted to see someone we didn’t want to marry rush into getting married and decide if that was right. It’s going to be fun and very “oh my God”We will be there to see her get married and how she deals with the aftermath. We’re also going to see her solo music pop and find her identity as a solo artist. She will have some guest stars who push her to be more Puerto Rican in her music. As she finds that, she’s going to also be figuring out how to be married and how to fall in love with a stranger. In the 12th episode [Valeria and Thomas]You will have to confront a difficult decision about your future. It quickly becomes a real relationship.

Naomi and Remy Ma’s Lady Z represent what could’ve been for Tupac and Biggie had they survived. Z will be the honorary fourth in place of Eve?

What I love about where we’re going with Queens— as we’re taking a brief pause with the Queens as we know them—they’re trying to figure out what they can do together next. Through 8 episodes, we saw how these women got back together, healed old wounds, dealt with their complicated personal lives and became the queens again of rap. It was truly a triumphant scene to witness. You can now watch them embark on their next venture by asking how you can make this happen for more queens.

Lady Z isn’t the last one. I’ll say that. This is going to be a thing and it’s not always going to be in the hip hop genre. They want to help women who are marginalized due to their age or for many other reasons in the same way they helped them.

In episode 10, we examine how male-dominated music industry is. There are many stories about young women treated like commodities by older men. So we’re tackling Lady Z’s story about how she was driven out of the industry and sexual assault in the music business in a very powerful way.

Regarding whether or not Lady Z could fill that void left behind by Brianna in some way, we’re open to anything. We’re going to have some guest stars come through in the iteration of what this record label looks like. Remy Ma as Lady Z fits the description of a forgotten queen who is extraordinarily talented, but was unfortunately pushed aside by circumstances beyond their control. Lady Z could be part of the group with the support of the ladies. It’s hard for Naomi, Jill, and Valeria to imagine the group without Brianna in it, but anything is possible.
