Princess Beatrice’s name was changed as it was ‘too yuppie’ for the Queen Of England

As speculation grows over what Princess Beatrice might name her new daughter, her name was almost very different to the one she has now if it weren’t for the Queen

Princess Beatrice's name was changed as it was 'too yuppie' for the Queen Of EnglandPrincess Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi welcomed their first daughter at the weekend – and now have the task of deciding on a name for their little girl.

Speculation has been growing over what the couple might call their 6lb 2oz newborn and who they might decide to pay homage to in their choice.

And Beatrice knows more than anyone the importance of picking a good name – especially as hers was believed to have been changed shortly after she was born.

As is tradition, royals usually first tell the Queen about their name choice to check she’s happy with it in an “informal chat” where it’s hoped she gives her blessing.

And usually, she doesn’t have any issues with the name suggestions.

But it’s believed that she wasn’t sure when Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson shared their idea after welcoming their first child in August 1988.

It took two weeks for the Yorks to formally announce her name because of the Queen’s concerns, reports the Sun.

Fergie had her heart set on naming her daughter Princess Annabel, but Her Majesty’s feedback was that the name was too “yuppie”.

However, it seems as if what the Queen takes away with one hand, she gives with another – she then suggested Beatrice, believed to have taken inspiration from the name of Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, and the rest is history.

Beatrice’s full name is Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, with her middle names paying tribute to her grandmother and great-grandmother.

The royals are known for picking sentimental names for their children. Her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, picked August and used Philip as the middle name, a tribute to her late grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.

At bookmaker William Hill, the latest odds show Elizabeth’s name, a clear nod to the baby’s great-grandmother, to be the favorite for Beatrice’s newborn.

Other names in the mix include Arabella, Francesca, Florence, Matilda, and Victoria.

Buckingham Palace announced yesterday that Beatrice had given birth with their families delighted by the news.

The palace said: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter on Saturday 18th September 2021, at 23.42, at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.

“The baby weighs 6 pounds and 2 ounces.

“The new baby’s grandparents and great-grandparents have all been informed and are delighted with the news. The family would like to thank all the staff at the hospital for their excellent care.

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well, and the couple is looking forward to introducing their daughter to her big brother Christopher Woolf.”
