Our little boy thought he had broken his leg, but now he has months to live.

Chandler Tran’s parents became concerned when he began to limp.

The eight-year old assured them that nothing had happened but mum and dad Cong Tran saw a large lump on Trang Tran’s left leg.

The NHS stated that scans had revealed that the lump was osteosarcoma. This type of bone cancer affects mostly children under 20 and young people.

Cong and Tang, both from Sydney, Australia, examined the lump at their home. They found it small but firm.

It was causing the little boy severe pain and they decided to take him to the hospital.

After a preliminary X-ray showed nothing, the doctors administered paracetamol to the child and sent him home.

However, the next day, still in pain, Chandler, who is a big fan of Star Wars and Pokémon, was taken for an MRI scan.

Chandler was diagnosed with bone lesions.

He was kept in hospital for six days, and then he underwent a series scans and tests.

“They called us back in – it was May 4, Star Wars Day, so I remember it.

“They said, ‘Look, we got the results of everything … your son’s been diagnosed with osteosarcoma’,” Cong told 7 News.

According to the NHS, it is not known why someone develops bone cancer.

The majority of people will have some combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery to remove cancerous bone.

Chandler had to have his leg amputated in an attempt to stop the growth of the tumor at the knee.

Unfortunately, Chandler’s cancer spread to his lungs after more tests.

What are the symptoms of bone cancer?

According to the NHS bone cancer can be affected by any bone. However most cases occur in the long bones and upper arms.

The key symptoms of Guidance are:

  • Persistent bone pain that persists into the night, which can get worse over time
  • swelling and redness (inflammation) over a bone, which can make movement difficult if the affected bone is near a joint
  • a noticeable lump over a bone
  • Fractures are a fractured bone that is weaker than the normal.
  • problems moving around – for example, walking with a limp.

According to doctors, if your child experiences persistent, severe, or worsening bone pain, you should see your GP.

In the event of an emergency, always call 999 or visit your closest A&E.

“His right lung was half filled with liquid and the tumours had grown both in size and in number,”Cong

“So we had meetings with the doctors and they pretty much said we’re at the point where we can’t save him … there was no more saving him,” Cong said.

The family made the terrible decision to stop their son from receiving chemotherapy. He can now return home and enjoy the rest his life with his family.

The Chandler family stated that little Chandler is fighting a good fight and one they hope he can win next year.

They said that their little boy had been home since then and they’ve seen their normal Chandler once again.
