Oscars Documentary Race Hits with 144 Entries Starting in 2021

According to email sent by the Academy to members of the branch, 144 feature documentaries have been made available to voters in The Documentary Branch of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The streaming platform is only for members and has almost all of the films. There are five films left to be viewed. “coming shortly.” While the Academy’s official list of qualifying films in the category will likely not be released until December, a recent email to doc-branch members said that the 27 films added in November and the five due to be added shortly would be the “final release”A selection of documentaries that are eligible.

If all 144 films meet the requirements, the field will be six films larger than last year’s 138 qualifying films. The record was broken in 2020 by 238 films that qualified for the doc feature category after the COVID-era relaxations of eligibility requirements.

This list includes nearly all the major contenders that have been nominated or awarded by other groups. “All That Breathes,” “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” “Fire of Love,” “Navalny”And “Good Night Oppy.” A few late-breaking films, including Werner Herzog’s “Theater of Thought,”Nominee for Cinema Eye Honors “A Night of Knowing Nothing”The nominees for the IDA Documentary Award “No Simple Way Home”And “The Pawnshop,”These are not included in the list.

The Academy members were able to view the films at seven times. They started on August 18th and continued through November. In August, fifteen features were shown in the screening room. Then, there were batches of 13, 29, 29 and 20 films, which were followed by the September and October batches. Finally, the final 32-film group was added.

A total of 98 documentaries were also made available.

To ensure that all qualifying films are viewed by a fair number of voters, members of the Documentary Branch will be given lists of films. The first round of voting will be held from December 12-15. A 15-film shortlist will be announced on December 21.
