Deadline reports that Apple is currently filming a documentary about Sidney Poitier (Hollywood Icon) following Friday’s passing. Reginald Hudlin will be directing and Oprah Winfrey will produce. Winfrey will be producing through her Harpo Productions and Network Entertainment.
The documentary has been under wraps for over a decade and was in production for more than a year. It’s an in-depth documentary on the life of Poitier, with the participation of his entire family. Apple Original Films will release the doc.
Poitier, who died Friday at the age of 94 at his home in Beverly Hills, was the first Black man to win an Academy Award for best actor for 1963’s Lilies of the Field The Oscar-winner was a pioneer in opening doors for minority performers, and he continued to do so in classics like In the Heat of the Night
, To Sir with Love and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?.
