New Amsterdam has just shut down Max after a big move, and that's a good thing.

Spoilers ahead of Episode 8 New AmsterdamSeason 5, called “All the World’s a Stage…”

In 1989, the ED was overrun with teenage beauty queens. New Amsterdam’s latest episode, but Max’s struggles didn’t involve any of the young women injured by the collapsing stage. After some difficulties trying to mediate among the bequests section and a veteran who had given her home to the hospital to him, he reached an agreement. He seemed eager to celebrate. Elizabeth WilderBy the end of the hour, she had already shut him down. move on after Helen. He was certainly sad about it, but I’d say that it’s a good thing.

Max and Elizabeth were Slowly but surely, we are getting closerAll throughout the Fifth and final seasonIt seemed so obvious that she would be his first woman after the abrupt ending of his relationship with Helen. They were still hanging out at the end. “All the World’s a Stage…”Chatting back and forth on the computer, he suggested dinner. She was all-in… when she thought he meant ordering in for a friendly takeout meal. When he clarified that he was thinking they’d go to Benihana “like a date,”She said immediately “no,”Without hesitation.

While I can’t say that I’m rooting for Max to get disappointment after disappointment in Season 5 (especially with episodes quickly running out), Elizabeth not immediately saying yes so that the two could head out on a date before the end of the episode seems like the best scenario for both of them… as well as for fans who may still be Sharpwin and Helen are hanging on.

In the grand scheme of things, Max’s relationship with the woman he intended to marry and considered the mother of his daughter ended just months ago, with little to no closure. The Sharpwin relationship was slowly built up before Max and Elizabeth got together. It might have been difficult to imagine Max moving forward to a new possible romance so quickly. Max might not have considered all the factors that contributed to his solid friendship with Elizabeth, which made him comfortable enough to make a move.

Even if he was 100 percent ready to move on by end of, “All the World’s a Stage,”Elizabeth may not know this and may have more practical concerns. He is also her medical director in New Amsterdam. Max and Helen were able to get away with it because they decided to move to London from New York. But it could prove to be a problem to Elizabeth.

Plus, the series hasn’t really shown her in a relationship, and the catastrophic karaoke episode of Season 4 suggested that she preferred casual hookups at the time. Max’s scenes in Season 5 were flirty, but not romantic. Neither was leading the other. Whatever her reasons for not agreeing, it was my opinion that it was the right thing at this time. Although the characters seem like a good match and are very sweet together, there are still some issues that need to be addressed before they can get together.

Even if New Amsterdam doesn’t have a checklist of complications to resolve (and workplace relationships are par for the course in primetime), it wouldn’t have felt right if Max made his big step forward from his heartbreak with Helen so casually at the end of an episode. He should have more to it than a request to Benihana at night.

All of this said, I do enjoy the dynamic between Max and Elizabeth, and can’t imagine a better choice for him to have another shot at romantic happiness in the remaining episodes of the series. This week’s refusal to go on a date with Max might be just the beginning of their relationship being fleshed out.
