My tiredness was due to too much holiday partying, but it was devastating.

A TEENAGER who blamed his tiredness on partying too much abroad was quickly dealt a severe blow.

Tom Hunt was just 18 when he, his friends and a few of their classmates went on an adventure around Europe in 2018 after completing their A-levels.

He said that he had told the Manchester Evening News: “From July of that year, I felt tired going to work. But then, I had just completed my A-levels. It was nothing you would not consider normal.

“I went with my friends and interrailing all over Europe.

“In Budapest, I started feeling quite ill but powered on thinking I needed to stop drinking and sleep a bit more but in Prague I was just ridiculously ill.

“I usually sleep for seven to eight hours, but I was only sleeping 18 hours. I knew something wasn’t right.

“I was struggling to eat anything because my throat was so sore.”

Tom from Hale felt extremely tired despite his increased sleep hours.

His lymph nodes (glands), which were located on his neck, were swollen. It was likely that he was fighting an illness.

So Tom booked an early flight home and booked in to see his GP – also his friend’s dad – the next day.

The doctor prescribed antibiotics and said that it was likely a throat infection.

There was an additional symptom that set off alarm bells.

Tom said: “I’d crossed my legs while I was on the train asleep for like three hours and I got a massive big lump.”

Tom told a surgeon about the lump he and his mother had stumbled upon, and they advised him to immediately seek medical help.

“So I emailed the doctor again on Tuesday night at about 11 o’clock and he emailed me straight back and said pop in again tomorrow I’m free at 11, see me then,”Tom said.

Tom reported feeling better at the GP and that his appetite had returned a bit.

However, the doctor stated that he “didn’t look right”And was “very pale”Therefore, we decided to conduct some blood tests.

Although Tom was diagnosed with glandular fever, blood tests revealed that something more sinister could have been going on.

Tom received a call from the doctor advising him to get two blood transfusions as soon as possible and to take him to Manchester Royal Infirmary where he underwent a series of tests.

Tom was admitted Wednesday night, and finally received answers Friday.

He was diagnosed as having leukaemia. This is a type of cancer in which blood cells can be damaged.

With Tom’s type, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, is rare. Every year, the UK diagnoses around 790 patients.

It causes white blood cells to be released from the bone marrow before they reach full maturity, which means they are less efficient.

This increases the risk of infection. Some of the most important signs include repeated infections over a short period of time. This is likely why Tom developed glandular fever.

Due to the increased number of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets can also be affected, leading to tiredness and pale skin.

Tom was taken to the Christie Hospital, south Manchester, for intensive treatment.

Tom underwent chemotherapy from April 2019 to April 2019, and required a variety of platelet transfusions.

But he said he’s been in “morphological remission”Seit Oktober/November 2018.

At 22 years old, she felt ready for university.

Tom was diagnosed with cancer only one week after he began feeling symptoms. He is now encouraging others to visit a doctor as soon as they feel the need.
