What is Meta Quest 3 and what are its benefits?
The next in Mark Zuckerberg’s line of virtual reality headsets is the Meta Quest 3.
It replaces the Meta Quest 2 which was launched originally as Oculus Quest 2 by Facebook (now Meta). Confusing? Yes.
However, Meta has confirmed that the Meta Quest 3 is now available, but it’s still not final.
The Meta Quest Standard line is a budget-friendly VR headset.
For instance, the Meta Quest 2 currently costs $399/£399.
That’s in contrast to the more premium Meta Quest Pro, which comes in at $1,499/£1,499.
Meta states that it must continue to develop the Quest Pro and the regular Quest as distinct lines.
One is made for a “games console”Price range and mass adoption are the two main advantages of one, while the second is better for geeks, wealthy people, and businesses.
Expect to see some improvements on the Quest 3 but specs will still be below the Quest Pro.
Although details on the headset are scarce, it is believed that the Quest 3 will be available. “mixed reality” features.
For example, the Quest Pro features full-colour passthrough with cameras that enable you to see the world around you.
This trick could be borrowed by the Quest 3.
However, it will likely not have access to the Meta Quest Pro’s face- and eyes-tracking technology.
Meta Quest 3 release date – when is it out?
Meta already confirmed that a new headset was in the works.
Meta stated in an earnings report that we will see “the launch of our next generation of our consumer Quest headset later next year”.
This suggests it won’t be out by the second half of 2023. However, nothing is certain.
For contrast, the Meta Quest 2 was unveiled on September 16, 2020 – and then released on October 13.
Meta could be on the same timeline with its Meta Quest 3.
It would be available on store shelves in time to celebrate Christmas 2023.
Meta Quest 3 price – how much will it cost?
The exact price of Meta Quest 3 is not known.
The Meta Quest 2 originally launched at $299/£299, but that price was actually increased earlier this year – to $399/£399.
Mark Zuckerberg has previously said that he wants the consumer Quest headset to fall around the price of a games console – like an Xbox or PlayStation.
He also stated that he would love it to be around $80 “$300, $400, $500 – that zone”.
Although the Meta Quest 3’s pricing isn’t exact, it will likely be somewhere in the middle.
It seems most likely that the current pricing for Meta Quest 2 will be repeated.
