Marvel directors compare blockbuster movies and video games

THE Russo brothers – known for directing action films, including many Marvel movies – have now compared video game action to all-time great films.

They are behind Spielberg and the second most successful directors of all time. This is due to their exceptional ability to direct action sequences.

Can gaming action sequences stand up to their movie counterparts?

From Captain America to Avengers: Endgame, you’ve likely enjoyed some of their work.

Talk to IGNThe brothers discussed what they believe videogame action can do against blockbuster movies in Hollywood.

Here we have video game action sequences as ranked by two of Hollywood’s greats.

Crash Bandicoot

Crash Bandicoot’s action sequences are shot to serve the gameplay, and the brothers understand this.

These video game movies were disastrous box office flops
These tie-in games did not live up to the great movies they were based on

But they found the camera angle that looks back at you while you jump over several obstacles to be rather dull.

They could have offered more angles to make the scene even more exciting.

One example they gave was to imagine the action from the dinosaur’s point of view, or if we were pulled lower down to see Crash’s reactions.

They were generally unimpressed and gave our boy bandicoot an overall score of three out ten.

Resident Evil 8

Resident Evil 8’s Ethan trying to escape from the prison while being bound in handcuffs is one of the most intense moments in the game.

It’s also a scene many players got stuck on because it isn’t obvious how to break free from the shackles.

The trope they called the Russo Brothers was overwhelming to the Russos brothers “the limited protagonist”.

It’s used most often in media in which the main character is placed in a terrible situation. Often, they are held hostage by parts of their body.

They also thought that first-person is a difficult angle to sell as you can’t see the person’s emotions.

Resident Evil received only a five-out of ten because of all these factors.

Uncharted

You probably thought the classic chase sequence, where Nathan Drake and his brother Sam in a motorbike chase through Madagascar, would have earned the director’s respect.

This Uncharted scene is frequently regarded as one of the most memorable action sequences in video game history.

The Russo brothers weren’t too impressed, however.

While the scene is classic action, which they compared to the opening scene from Bond movie Skyfall, it doesn’t do anything unique or groundbreaking with it.

While it was an excellent action piece, Mr Drake received only seven of ten.

It takes two

It Takes Two may be underestimated by some people due to its cartoony graphics style.

The Russo brothers demonstrated that there is more to the mole chase sequence than meets the eyes.

This shows many angles that are not often seen in films or games. From a vertical shot that is too high, to a very wide angle.

The camera creates the illusion that there is no escape. They even compare it to Peter Jackson’s work.

It was applauded by the Russo brothers with an 8/10.

Part 2 of “The Last of Us”

The couple called it immediately after seeing the clip of Abby in hospital from The Last of Us Part 2 “one of the greatest video games of all time.”

They point out that Spielberg’s inspiration is a source of inspiration. The escape is what you should be focusing on, rather than the monster who chases you.

The creature, like Jaws, is terrifying because it is seldom seen.

This sequence is gripping and earned nine out of ten.

Heavy Rain

This was probably one of the last games you would expect to see at the top of this list, but the Russo brothers enjoyed Norman Jayden’s clumsy pursuit of a suspect.

They are most well-known for their Marvel films but they also worked on sitcoms like Arrested Development or Community.

The suspect’s insistence on throwing more boxes reminded them of a comedy like Blues Brothers.

They couldn’t argue with the comedic value, even if it was unintentional, giving it a ten out of ten.
