Mama’s Affair, Starring Keung To And Jer Lau, To Release In The UK

EXCLUSIVE:Trinity CineAsia now has UK rights to Hong Kong family dramas Mama’s AffairThis is the debut film acting of two members from a hot local boy band. Mirror, Keung To and Jer Lau, from Hong Kong’s Emperor Motion Pictures.

Kearen Pan directed the film. It opened in Hong Kong last weekend (August 11), and took the number 1 spot after it had earned HK$930.440 ($119,000) previews. This was a far better performance than the Brad Pitt-starrer. Bullet TrainNow in its second weekend.

Mama’s AffairThe film will be released in the UK on 19 August, just one week after its Hong Kong debut. It premiered at Japan’s Osaka Asian Film Festival in March and recently played at New York Asian Film Festival.

Teresa Mo plays a former top artiste manager who chooses family over her career when she became pregnant. Keung To plays the young waiter and it causes tension between her daughter and Jer Lau, her 17-year old son.

Pang is a director, writer and actress in theatre and film. Her 2017 directorial debut was her first. 29+1At the Hong Kong Film Awards, he won best director and was nominated for six other awards.

After a depressing start to the year, when Hong Kong’s cinemas were closed for four months between January and April due to Covid, the territory is starting to see a revival of sorts for local films with recent hits including work-from-home comedy Chilli Laugh Stories. Hong Kong International Film Festival (August 15-31) has more premieres.

Trinity CineAsia was recently released Chilli Laugh StoriesIt is based in the UK and taps into a growing audience from Hong Kong who have decided to move to the UK after the introduction of the National Security Law.

Pang said: “On the surface, this is a story about family, but what I really want to explore is loneliness. Each of the three main characters have to deal with sudden changes in life, and they must each take a look into their innermost feelings including frustration and abandonment.”
