Majorca has more to offer than just party-central Magaluf. Why you should go to the quiet village where only the locals go

WE had spent the day sailing – legs dangling over the side of the boat, drinking in views of the cleanest, clearest azure- blue waters.

As the sun set, we sat down on loungers by the rooftop pool with a cocktail in hand and watched the boats bob in the harbour.

Also worth a trip is the fishing village of Cala Figuera, only a 20-minute drive from the hotel

It was as peaceful and tranquil as any day I can recall.

Majorca may be known for Palma’s chic shopping and culture and Magaluf’s full-on party atmosphere.

Colonia de Sant Jordi, however, was a small town that offered a laid-back and different side to this favourite holiday spot.

On the south east coast, only 40 minutes from the airport, Colonia de Sant Jordi is a former small fishing village, popular with the Spaniards, many of whom have second homes here.

I stayed at Hotel Honucai on the Seafront. It has 76 rooms.

There’s a gym and spa but the star of the show has to be the rooftop pool and bar.

You can do yoga in the morning, relax by the pool during lunch, and then unwind with sundowners at night.

The hotel’s Mediterranean decor is light, airy and modern and a lot of the ornaments are sourced from the island.

This theme continues into the rooms which are beautiful decorated and fully equipped with all you need.

The rooms boast stunning views of the sea and comfy outdoor sofas, which are great for reading (as I did).

However, the hotel offers adjoining rooms which are great for parents with small children.

Saturday evenings “The Top”, the hotel’s rooftop bar, has live music playing, as well as delicious cocktails served each evening.

The rooftop bar has doubled up as daytime sunbeds. So you can soak in the beautiful views while enjoying the stunning views from the pool.

The hotel’s restaurant, Salicornia, specialises in seafood, serving the freshest local produce.

I ate some of the best fish dishes I’ve tasted, including scallop ceviche, tuna tartare and squid-ink croquettes.

Fresh tuna on flatbread is a traditional Majorcan specialty.

An extra treat was the chance to see a demonstration of the art of Ronqueo, the tradition of filleting gargantuan bluefin tuna — or red tuna as it is known in Spain.

The name derives from the noise that the expert fishmonger makes while cutting into the fish.

It was fascinating to see the technique used by the Ronqueo master as he carefully cut to ensure every part of the fish was perfectly prepared.

The hotel offers a lot, but there are many other things to do nearby.

For a slightly different day out we visited Ses Salines d’Es Trenc to see how salt is harvested on the island.

Hidden gem

The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. I was able to participate in the collection of salt before drying it.

We took to the waves with boat tour firm Nautica Colonia to explore Majorca’s dramatic coastline, stopping off in the clear- blue waters to swim and snorkel, while admiring some of the superyachts.

Cala Figuera, a fishing village located only 20 minutes away from the hotel, is another worthwhile destination.

Every corner I turned revealed more stunning views of this idyllic port.

It’s the perfect day out for a stroll followed by lunch or a drink overlooking the water.

If you are after the feeling of sand between your toes then there’s a small beach just metres from the hotel.

You can also explore the beaches of Es Carbo by following the coastal path.

Those up for an activity won’t be disappointed, with kayaking and paddle boarding also on offer.
