Listeria Outbreak in 6 States Dies at Least 1 Sickens 16

A listeria outbreak in six states, which has been tied to deli meats and cheese, has killed at least one person and sickened 16, according to reports.

The Wednesday, the CDC released a statementMany were hospitalized, with one illness resulting in the loss or pregnancy.

From April 2021 to September 20,22, there were seven new infections in New York. There were also three in Maryland. One of these was fatal. NPR reported.

According to the CDC, investigators are still trying identify specific products and delis that might be contaminated by this outbreak strain.

Many reported eating meat or cheese from deli counters where investigators detected listeria in open packages of sliced meats and cheese in the environment, CBS News reported.

Listeria is a persistent infection that can be difficult to eradicate from surfaces and equipment. CBS News reported that symptoms of Listeria include fever, muscle pains, nausea, and diarrhea. It is particularly dangerous for seniors, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems.
