Kelly Clarkson releases Christmas song on canceled exes in September

Christmas is three months away, but that isn’t stopping Kelly Clarkson from ringing in the holiday season early.

The Grammy award-winning singer just put out a new single and it’s called, “Christmas Isn’t Canceled (Just You).”

This isn’t your typical “Deck the Halls” jam. It’s more in line with Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” or “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Infused with empowerment, the lyrics basically say an ex cannot ruin Christmas time, the New Year or anything else.

The lyrics go, in part, “You ruined all my favorite things. But you won’t take Christmas from me. … This year won’t be so blue. Christmas isn’t canceled. Just you.”

“Christmas Isn’t Canceled (Just You)” is the lead single off the 39-year-old’s upcoming ninth studio album and second Christmas album, “When Christmas Comes Around…” The album, with features from Ariana Grande and Chris Stapleton on it, is set to be released on October 15 – just ahead of Halloween. It’ll face competition with Carrie Underwood’s re-release of “My Gift (Special Edition),” her 2020 Christmas album that will now feature three new songs.

Clarkson previously released the Christmas album, “Wrapped in Red,” in 2013. Back in 2019, her remake of “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” alongside John Legend drew controversy for its change to more inclusive lyrics like, “your body, your choice.”

A majority of artists have released Christmas songs closer to the holiday to take advantage of the seasonal interest. Clarkson isn’t alone in releasing a Christmas song so early. In 2017, fellow “The Voice” judges Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton released a Christmas song in September.

The “Voice” coach and “The Kelly Clarkson Show” host divorced Brandon Blackstock in July of 2020, citing irreconcilable differences. In November of 2020, court documents obtained by USA TODAY revealed that Clarkson won primary custody of both of their children.
