Joe Millionaire’s Big Return To Air Was Almost Ruined Thanks To One Big Snafu And Production Halt

Joe MillionaireFox introduced a new format to its reality dating series, which asks if contestants are there for the love or money. Joe Millionaire: Richer or poorer? The series was relaunched in the 2000s. However, production was halted on the first night due to a huge snafu.

Original Joe MillionaireA group of women were introduced to a man, under the pretense that he was worth millions. However, the winner was shocked to learn that the lead was actually blue-collar worker with much smaller bank accounts. The reboot kept the premise the same but avoided the problematic aspect of misleading its contestants by introducing two leads – one worth $10 million, and the other not, leaving the women to pursue one or the other without knowing which one was the millionaire. Here is the point where things got messy.

Caroline Campbell recognized Steven McBee after Kurt Sowers introduced them as the eligible bachelors. She also whispered to another contestant about how she had followed McBee on Instagram. McBee recognized Campbell as well and grabbed Sowers, host/butler Martin Andrew immediately to alert them. Campbell was then taken from the other women by a producer who took her away before she could give any further information.

Although Steven McBee was not a real person and Caroline Campbell wasn’t, she had been following McBee on social media so that she would know that McBee led a lavish lifestyle. With the whole premise of the show being contingent on not knowing which of the leads was the millionaire, Campbell’s presence was a huge issue. McBee agreed to send Campbell home. He said to her:

I came here to meet women who don’t know me and find true love. I don’t know anything. I know who I am, and it’s very unfortunate. I will have to send you home. It’s so very sorry. It’s not against you.

Joe Millionaire: Richer, Poorer seemed to narrowly avoid disaster, as Caroline Campbell could have unknowingly spoiled the show by sharing details of Steven McBee’s lifestyle with the other contestants. Producers stopped production on the night even though Campbell was gone. They did not reveal the $10 million twist until next day.

It’s a little strange that the Caroline situation got to that point in the first place. You’d think with the whole show depending on its leads’ anonymity, producers would know if any of the contestants followed Kurt Sowers or Steven McBee on social media. But it made for some fun drama in the premiere, and isn’t that what really counts?

However, the show must go on. Kurt Sowers & Steven McBee started their journeys to hopefully finding true love. Joe Millionaire: Richer, PoorerResumption at 8 PM Thursday, January 13th Fox. To see which other shows are premiering this month, be sure to visit our 2022 TV Calendar.
