Current network TV comedies like Abbott ElementaryAnd The ConnersThey are a popular choice with viewers as they rank amongst the most-watched broadcast half-hours. Those ratings stats, as well as the rating stats for just about every other TV program (except NFL games), pale in comparison to those of the huge numbers achieved by ‘90s faves such as Seinfeld and Friends. The latter sitcom’s star Lisa Kudrow obviously knows now how widely beloved Phoebe & Co. have been for nearly 30 years, but says she wasn’t fully aware of the show’s popularity until its Other New York-set Series SeinfeldIt was the lead-in for the Must See TV era. And who did she get the clue? Jerry Seinfeld, although in as bemusedly smug an manner as possible.
The new horror-comedy The ParentingLisa Kudrow, who co-stars Parker Posey and Edie Falco, was interviewed by The Daily BeastAbout the upcoming return to her NBC genealogy series What do you think you are?And of course, the subject of FriendsShe spoke up. When she was asked if there had ever been ratings competition between her shows, Seinfeld, Kudrow said that wasn’t the case, and then revealed the plum cheeky way Jerry Seinfeld reacted when she met him as Friendswas exploding. In her words:
No. No. The ratings for the first season were fine, regardless of how great Friends was. We didn’t lose enough Mad About You so we started building. But it was during the summer when Seinfeld was our lead in, that we really took off. Jerry Seinfeld was present at one party that I attended, and I recall saying, ‘Hi,’He added, ‘You’re welcome.’ I said, ‘Why, thank you… what?’He added, ‘You’re on after us in the summer, and you’re welcome.’ And I said, ‘That’That’s just right. Thank you.’
Honestly, it’s hard to think about a way Jerry Seinfeld could have handled that exchange in a way that felt more true to his Seinfeld persona. This is the persona of most of the characters on that series. Nothing says pompous like being unable to congratulate someone without also loudly tooting one’s own horn. The stand-up comedian was obviously self-aware in making his comments, so it’s assumed they were said in light-hearted jest, as opposed to anything more sincerely vindictive.
Of course, that assumption is as much based on Lisa Kudrow’s seeming lack of leftover anger from that party as anything else, since Jerry Seinfeld was truly the king of network TV at the time, and his show did have the audience-amassing power to turn FriendsFrom a “just fine”Seinfeld would turn a sitcom into an enduring success story whose cast members would earn $1 million per episode. So it’s not like Seinfeld would have been overstepping things Too much even if he had been more genuinely egotistical about his show’s impact on Kudrow’s.

The special allowed the ensemble to relive some of the glory days they had, but not everyone still has the memories. This special was nominated to various Emmys and other awards.
