J.K. Simmons’ thoughts on bringing J. Jonah Jameson home for No Way Home

Spider-Man is Far From HomeThere were many surprises in the movie, but none more surprising than J. Jonah Jameson’s return. The post-credit scene of Far from Home, we learn that not only does Jameson exist in the MCU, but that actor J.K. Simmons has returned to reprise his role from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. This Jameson is different from the others. There’s no way home.

If you’ve seen LokiOr What If…?You already know what the multiverse is doing to the MCU. Marvel Studios movies now allow you to use heroes and villains from franchises that have ended many years ago.

We already know that Doc Ock, Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), all three characters from the Raimi trilogy, will return to this world. Spider-Man, There’s No Way Home. We’ll also see the Lizard (Rhys Ifans) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) from The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as the two Spider-Men from Sony’s previous Spider-ManMovies: TobeyMaguire and Andrew Garfield

With all that in mind, where does J. Jonah Jameson fit within this rich story?

J. Jonah Jameson’s role in There’s no way home

This week, J.K Simmons appeared on an episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy, but sad, confused podcast. Horowitz and the actor spoke for about an hour. Unsurprisingly, he was also very open about his role. There’s no way home. Here’s what Simmons had to say about the J. Jonah Jameson variant we will see in Spider-Man, There’s No Way HomeNext month (via Comic Book Movie):

You know what, I think it’s a slightly different version. Certainly, from the creators of the current iteration of the story, it’s a very different character. To me, it’s a slightly different character. It’s the same blowhard; the same guy with less hair. It’s funny, I kinda wish that he had the exact same hair. The most important thing is that he’s still the same blowhard and he does have the same damn moustache and cigar, at least.

Simmons sounds like he was in the same boat as Marvel when it comes to bringing back this character. Simmons says that JJJ will be the role he plays in the story. “a little comic relief thing that gets sprinkled lightly into the movie,”So be realistic about your expectations. Marvel needs to be able to serve three Spider-Men and Doctor Strange.
