Is There a Drago Franchise in The Rocky Franchise? Dolph Lundgren's Take

In 1985, Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa faced off against Russian powerhouse Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, a story that was recently explored through a new lens thanks to the director’s cut. In 2018, Dolph Lundgren retold Drago. Creed II, which saw the character’s son, Viktor Drago, exchanging fisticuffs with Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed. Now, according to Lundgren, there’s been talk of continuing the Drago saga in a Rocky spinoff.

Dolph Lundgren spoke out about his disappointment that Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago lost their fight in a recent interview. Creed IIBut he continued to talk about how we may be seeing more Drago in future. Lundgren said it best THR:

By the way, I think there’s some talk about doing a whole spinoff on Drago with MGM. You might get more of this.

When we left off with Ivan and Florian Munteanu’s Viktor Drago at the end of Creed II, their relationship was in a healthier place thanks to the former realizing that the latter’s life was more important to him than any victory. While it would be simple to just leave the Dragos and go on with our lives, knowing that the dysfunctional cycle is over, it seems there are discussions about reuniting them in a movie. Judging by Dolph Lundgren’s comment, it sounds like such a project is far from a sure thing, but the fact that it’s even being discussed is intriguing.

At the moment, RockyThe franchise continues to move along in the Creed film series with Michael B. Jordan as the director. Creed III. Sylvester Stallone spoke also about the possibility of returning to the main RockyFilm series that includes an epilogue about an elderly boxing champion who trains a young man who illegally entered the United States. Throw in a Drago-centric movie, and that’s enough for this franchise to evolve into a full-blown cinematic universe. Given that Florian Munteanu’s fame has been boosted by Shang-Chi, the Legend of the Ten Rings and Shang-ChiThe future and what’s next Borderlands movie, maybe that combined with Lundgren’s significant profile can help with pushing the Drago spinoff forward.
