Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom The topic of film has been hot for years. It was controversial when it was released. This is a valid point. The movie is a product its time and the problems we now have with it were not likely issues that filmmakers intended. It is important to think about why some aspects of this movie may be problematic today.
Quan said that the film was not problematic and also rebutted the claim of it being controversial. He also pointed out that his character was a pioneering example of Asian representation in film. Quan stated:
Spielberg was the pioneer to include an Asian face in a Hollywood blockbuster. Short Round is funny, he’s courageous, he saves Indy’s ass. This was rare back then. For many years, we were back at square 1.
