Another form of access that you can grant an app is location.

A game like Pokemon Go, for example, needs to know exactly where you are in order to function properly.

However, there are TWO types Apple location sharing – approximate location and Precise Location – and you can choose which you grant.

The first is an approximate location. In some cases, it might suffice.

A recommendation app for restaurants doesn’t have to know your exact location, but it does need to know your approximate position.

However, a taxi app may require your precise location to pick up you at the correct spot.

Precise Location is a setting used by Instagram – but lots of other apps too.

For example, you could tag your posts with a location or search for local businesses.

How to Control Precise Location

To control all of your location data, go into Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

This is where you can control which apps have access to your location and in what circumstances.

Precise Location can be toggled on or off by an app.

You can also set iOS apps to only use your location once or while you are using the app.

However, you may lose access to certain features that are dependent on it.

Is Precise Location safe?

Precise location is as secure as the app it’s being offered to.

There’s no need to worry if the app is trusted and you can see why it needs your exact location.

However, you should always keep location-sharing to an absolute minimum. It’s your personal data.

It can enable amazing features to function properly with Precise Locate, so it is good that it exists.

It is important to be careful about what you post online.

Consider whether your location should be included in any social media posts.

Although it is not common, there have been reports from police that oversharing online has led to people becoming victims of crime.

In August 2022 viral posts started to circulate claiming that thieves were using the Precise Setting on Instagram to find targets.
