What is the total number of episodes in The Empress?

The latest example is the German-language series The Empress which tells the story of Empress Elisabeth of Austria in a drama to rival The Crown or ITV’s Victoria.

Every chapter of this historical drama is filled with intrigue, political maneuvering, and viewers are hungry for more. But how many episodes does The Empress have in total?

The Empress paraded itself onto Netflix on Thursday September 29, 2022.

Based on true events, the series follows 16-year-old Elisabeth, nicknamed Sisi, who falls in love with her sister’s fiancé, Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria.

Their love affair sends shockwaves through the Viennese court and after their wedding, Sisi must find a way to assert herself against her mother-in-law, the power-hungry Sophie, and her brother-in-law, Maxi, who wants Franz’s throne (and Sisi) for himself.

Sisi’s struggles at court are also set against the backdrop of wider turmoil as enemy troops gather on the borders of the Habsburg Empire while people in Vienna itself begin to rise up against the ruling emperor.

How many episodes is The Empress?

The Empress has six episodes.

Netflix has released all six chapters in one release, which means that viewers can consume the series at their own pace, rather than waiting for weeks or months. ‘Part 2’We saw this with Stranger Things in 2022.

Each episode of The Empress runs between 51-62 minutes. This gives the series a total runtime of 341 minutes or five hours 41 minutes.

Season 2 opportunities explored [spoilers]

Netflix hasn’t renewed The Empress yet, but there are still many stories to tell if season 2 is approved.

As we mentioned, The Empress is based off the story Elisabeth and Austria’s life. From episode 6 onwards, there is much more of her life left to discover.

Season 1 ends with Elisabeth discovering she is pregnant and venturing into a crowd to tell them the news.

Elisabeth discovered that she was actually pregnant in 1854, which is the year she married Emperor Franz.

As she died in 1898, her 60th birthday, there are still 44 years to explore. This gives The Empress ample story potential, should Netflix decide to order another season.
