Hank died in a car accident. Who killed him in Breaking Bad?

*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul*

Ever since Better Call Saul’s first season, the show has featured subtle references to its parent show Breaking Bad and as the prequel has progressed and Jimmy completed his transformation into Saul Goodman, those references have become increasingly obvious.

This came to a head in the final episode of Better Call Saul as Jimmy McGill finally faced the consequences of his actions and his part to play in building Walter White’s criminal empire.

During the negotiations for Saul’s plea deal, Marie Schrader is invited into the room to ask about the fate of her husband, Hank, and whether Saul played any part in his death during the events of Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul references Hank Schrader’s death

Saul Goodman is taken into negotiations with the government lawyers after being arrested in Omaha, Nebraska.

After seeing Marie Schrader in the room while she entered, Saul asks Marie Schrader to join him during negotiations.

Marie holds nothing back after she is invited in and does all she can to heap guilt onto Saul for his part to play in Hank’s death.

However, Saul being Saul, he manages to paint himself as the victim by saying that he was intimidated into working for Walter White – which eventually sees him manage to cut a deal that would see him serve just seven years in jail.

How did Hank Schrader die?

Hank Schrader was killed in an episode 14 of Breaking Bad Season 5, titled Ozymandias.

The chain of events that led to Hank’s death began several episodes earlier when he finally put the pieces together and worked out that Walter White was Heisenberg after finding a book that had been signed by Gale Boetticher in the same handwriting as notes found at Gus Fring’s super lab.

Hank worked with Jesse Pinkman for several episodes, trying to devise a plan to capture Walt and bring down the drug empire.

In episode 13, Hank stages a photo to make it seem like Jesse has found Walt’s buried money, causing Walt to panic and drive out to its hiding place in the desert.

However, when Walt arrives at the money’s hiding place, he realises that he’s been tricked and calls a gang of hitmen to come to his aid while Hank, Steve Gomez and Jesse are also on their way.

Episode 13 ends with a bloody shootout in which Steve Gomez is killed and Hank survives. Hank was then killed in episode 14.

Hank Schrader was murdered in Breaking Bad.

Hank Schrader was murdered by Jack Welker.

Jack, played by Michael Brown, was the leader of a criminal gang that had neo-Nazi connections and white supremacist ties. Walter White hired Jack to kill Jesse Pinkman when he found out that Hank was working with his ex-partner.

Walt tried to stop Hank’s hit after realizing that he was in danger from the gang.

But Walt’s efforts proved to be too little, too late as both Steve Gomez and Hank were killed while Jesse was kidnapped and held captive by Jack’s nephew, Todd, played by Jesse Plemons.

Walt executes his revenge on Jack in Breaking Bad’s final episode. He kills Jack and the rest of his gang, before dying from a gunshot wound.
