When The Little Mermaid When the live-action version was announced, I was intrigued about how they would film the underwater scenes. The cast and crew will have to work in real and fake water, so it is obvious that this would be a difficult project. Halle Bailey (who will be playing Ariel) addressed the physical challenges that she faced in taking on this role.
One of the most anticipated remakes of the musical classic is here Films in 2023This has drawn a lot of attention. Since its announcement, people have been discussing the casting, music and how it would be made. Bailey explained how creating an underwater world is not an easy task. YouTube video:
I was in intense physical training for three months and then every single day I’d either be up in the air on wires, in a harness, or I’d be in the water all day. It was super exciting but I think my body, that was the hardest thing, and it’s the most in shape I’ve ever been in my life. It was tough, but it was worth it.
It sounds like she had to train like how The Avengers actors have to train to get in shape for their movies. In the same video, Bailey explained that she really didn’t film much underwater. Bailey explained that most of her work was done using wires in the air, and a tuning fork. This allowed her to capture the best possible footage. “swim in the air” simulating Ariel’s underwater world. She said that she did manage to do a bit of underwater work.
It was insane how often I would get submerged. I was in a large water tank with a wave machine. I can’t wait until you guys actually see it so you’ll know what I’m talking about, but it felt like I was in the middle of the ocean.
No wonder it’s taken years and will take another one to finish up this movie. Filming was both very strenuous and cool. I’d also assume that if they did a lot of the underwater work outside of the water it will take a lot of post-production work to create the underwater kingdom.
The movie will not be released until next year, but Disney did release it. Teaser trailer for The Little Mermaid. Bailey said that Bailey was the first time she had ever seen herself.In the movie was an “overwhelming”She gets it from experience “emotional just talking about it.”This movie is significant because it marks the first time a Black woman has played a Disney princess in live action. That plus the amount of physical work she had to put into the movie, it makes sense she’d be emotional.
In the days since the trailer was released it’s become clear the cultural impact this movie will have.Black parents filmed their daughters’ reactionsThe trailer shows how excited the kids were to see themselves in the trailer. Bailey responded to the reactionsBy saying that she was “truly in awe”She was overwhelmed by the love she received from her children.
On the flip side, she has also received racist backlash from people who don’t think a Black woman should be playing the mermaid. However, there have been many stars. She is being defended by fellow Disney princess Rachel Zegler.
Bailey needed to be strong physically for the shoot. Now she’s showing us how mentally strong and resilient he is as we wait for the movie.
