Gary Oldman Lays in a Coffin as He Filmed ‘Dracula’, Co-Star Says

Gary Oldman was always known for being overwhelmed by the characters he played throughout his career. However, for Count Dracula he went beyond that.

The 1992 Francis Ford Coppola movie “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,”Oldman portrays the role of the Count in the film, and his co-star Cary Elwes stated that Oldman really did live like the legendary vampire.

“Gary was sleeping in a coffin every night, that was how seriously he took it,” Elwes The Hollywood ReporterA recent interview. “He was sequestered from us all — by choice.”

Elwes is one of the vampire hunters in the movie. The “Princess Bride”Star stated that Coppola brought all the cast to his property in California’s Napa Valley for rehearsals. The director ordered that all the hunters lived together.

“Francis believes that the more time the cast spends together that will translate on-screen,” Elwes said.

So while Elwes and the other hunters in the movie — which included Anthony Hopkins and Keanu Reeves — all hung out, Oldman stayed secluded.

“Poor Gary had to live by himself,”Elwes stated that he had slept in a coffin.

“We met him for the first time on set during rehearsals and then we’d never see him again,”He stated.

Oldman’s performance was one of his most memorable and moving performances.

In “Dracula”Oldman is transformed several times by those who try to kill him, while trying to win back Winona Ryder (a woman he believes is his reincarnation of his wife).

The movie would go on to win three Oscars — best makeup, costume design, and sound effects — but despite his efforts, nothing for Oldman.
