Q) MY donkey Rosy lives with our horses, but I’m wondering if I should consider getting her company of her own kind?
She seems really happy but I would like advice.
Mike Carter, Braintree, Essex
A) Absolutely, Mike! I highly recommend finding Rosy a donkey friend. You’ll be amazed at the joy and social interaction that a companion can bring to her life. Did you know that in many countries across Europe, it’s illegal to keep a single donkey? This is because they are distinct creatures with unique social needs. So, do yourself—and Rosy—a favor: search for another adorable donkey to keep her company. There are lots of rescue organizations with donkeys looking for loving homes!
Q) FOR a long journey in my car, where would it be best to put my Labrador, Sam?
On the back seat with a dog seatbelt on, or in the boot in his bed? I worry he may overheat in the boot.
Nigel Brown, Solihull
A) Great question, Nigel! The safest and most sensible option is to secure Sam with a dog seatbelt in the back seat. You can travel with him in the boot as well, but he must either be in a crate or have a guard in place to prevent him from roaming freely, which could cause distractions or worse during sudden stops. If the car is climate-controlled, overheating in the boot shouldn’t be a concern. But always keep an eye on him; even if he appears to be resting, a well-placed ear can catch any panting sounds!
Q) I AM looking to buy a pedigree Bengal cat but I’ve heard they can get heart issues.
Should I ask the breeder for documentation? What else can I do?
Fiona Bartlett, Brighton
A) Kudos to you for considering genetic health before making a significant purchase! Many pet owners overlook this aspect, resulting in heartache down the line. Bengal cats can suffer from a specific heart disease known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM. While a genetic test for HCM isn’t available, I highly recommend requesting an echocardiogram of potential breeding cats from your breeder. Don’t hesitate to walk away if they show ignorance on this issue. Prioritize responsible breeding practices to secure a healthy and happy new feline friend!
Q) AT the weekend, we feared my four-year-old cocker spaniel was going to die.
George had an “obstruction” in his bowel that the vet thought might be seaweed, which he loves.
Obviously, I will try to stop him from eating it, but is it worth giving him probiotics?
Jaqueline Roberts, Blackpool
A) Poor George! I’m relieved to hear he’s recovered, but it’s true: next time, he might not be so lucky. While probiotics won’t harm him, they won’t resolve this issue either. The best solution is proactive prevention; limit his access to seaweed. Avoid those beach trips where it lingers or consider using a basket muzzle during walks to deter him from snacking on it. As long as George is getting a complete and balanced diet tailored to his unique needs, he’ll be fine!
Introducing Sid, one of Britain’s most pampered cats! Sid won’t drink from just any bowl—he’s got a taste for finer things and insists on only using his special glass! Rescued as a kitten from a vet’s surgery, he now lives with his owner, Sally Casey, in Leeds. His go-to drinkware? A Guinness pint glass! “It may be a Guinness glass, but Sid only drinks water from it, thankfully!” says Sally with a laugh.
A FIFTH of pet owners plan to turn their heating on when they leave the house to keep their furry companions warm this winter, regardless of costs. A recent survey found that a third of owners also blast the TV or radio to keep their pets entertained while they’re away!
According to research from heating provider Worcester Bosch, it takes the average pet owner 20 minutes to ensure their furry friends are snug before stepping out. If you know your pet spends most of their day in one room, consider only heating that space to save energy while providing them with a cozy environment.
Keeping our pets happy and healthy is a rewarding journey. By asking the right questions and implementing expert advice, you’re one step closer to giving your beloved companions a happy life. Here’s to happy tails and wagging hearts!
