The Straw Trick

It is nearly impossible to take necklaces with you without them becoming tangled.

But there’s a way to prevent bracelets and necklaces getting twisted.

Just loop the other end through a straw and fasten it. This will stop your necklace from getting lost in your bag.

You can make bracelets by cutting the straw in half and looping the bracelet the same way.

Jewellery Wraps

Jewellery wraps save space in your suitcase and protect your jewellery from getting tangled.

They are typically made from soft fabrics, such as leather. They have multiple compartments with zips and press-stud sections for earrings.

Jewellery Boxes

There’s no need to take an entire jewellery box full of every piece you own, but a smaller travel jewellery box is a great investment if you’re packing several pieces.

Jewellery boxes include different compartments designed to hold specific types of jewellery and can be locked to give an extra layer of protection.

Pill Cases

A simple, inexpensive solution to packing smaller pieces of jewellery is to use a pill case.

They are cheap and a great option for packing stud earrings and other small, delicate pieces of jewellery, such as gold rings.

Each pair can have their very own compartment. This keeps them all organized.

Buttons

An old large button is a great way to protect your stud earrings and keep them in matching pairs. Just insert the studs through one of the tiny button holes. Secure the button with the back by securing the earring to the button.

You don’t have to worry about packing your jewellery. There are other problems that may arise on holiday.

Suncream

Much like other cosmetic products such as makeup and moisturiser, suncream can have an impact on your jewellery’s sparkle.

The build up of suncream can cause your jewellery to dull and even tarnish your precious metals.

Apply your suncream and ensure it is fully absorbed into your skin before putting your jewellery on.

This will help to reduce the build up of suncream on your jewellery.

Chlorine

A summer holiday isn’t complete without a dip in the pool.

Chlorine can damage precious metals like gold and cause them to become weaker.

Sterling silver can also tarnish due to chlorine contact.

To avoid this it is best to remove all jewellery prior to swimming in chlorinated water.

Salt Water

Sea water can be damaging to different types of jewellery as well.

Salt water can erode layers of your jewellery which can lead to weakening.

Wearing jewellery in the sea can also be dangerous with the risk of losing it much higher.

It’s important to remove jewellery before taking a dip in the sea.

Moisture

The heat can be turned up on holiday, which can cause more moisture on the skin.

Sweat can make your jewellery lose its shine and potentially lead to tarnishing if it is not cleaned regularly.

To avoid this, remove your jewellery during the day while the sun is at its hottest.

Robert Cuomo, Managing Director of Hatton Jewellers, said: “When heading on holiday, jewellery is often the last thing that is considered, however, it’s important to remember that there are several factors that could damage your precious metals.

“From suncream that dulls your jewellery’s shine to salt water that erodes metals.

“To ensure you don’t lose your jewellery while travelling, we recommend you travel with your jewellery in your hand luggage and use some clever storage tips such as a travel jewellery box, pill case for earrings and the straw trick for your necklaces to keep your jewellery safe and secure during your journey.”
