Eric Idle slams Elon Musk for taking Monty Python’s ideas

Elon Musk, Twitter’s owner, said that his plan to charge a $8 monthly subscription fee for a blue check verification to keep and receive a blue check verification was inspired by Monty Python’s British comedy troupe.

Eric Idle, an actor, comedian, and Monty Python member, denounced the tech billionaire’s stealing of the surreal comedy group’s original ideas.

Musk tweeted Tuesday (1 November) to reiterate his position that he would like to charge a fee for verification of Twitter accounts. Musk also joked that the idea was inspired by a Monty Python sketch.

“Totally stole idea of charging for insults & arguments from Monty Python, tbh,”He shared the clip and tweeted it, as well as a clip from a sketch of one.

The clip featured John Cleese (comedian) and Michael Palin (comedian). A man visits a clinic, where people pay to enter arguments. After a long debate with a professional argumenter, he leaves the clinic.

Idle, who was not in Musk’s sketch, took to Twitter the next day (2 November) to voice his disapproval at Musk’s tweet.

“So you’re allowed to steal, but you wish to charge us to verify who we are? Good luck with that then,”He wrote.

Idle appeared to also suggest that he would probably discontinue Twitter if he needed to pay the extra cash to maintain his verification on Monday (31 Oct).

“But if he charges me to entertain you, and he lets the orange monster back, I think I may decline…,”He wrote in part Monday, 31 October.

Musk bought the social media platform last week for $44 billion. Musk has been making structural changes since then.

The most talked about structural change is however the cost of verification.

Opponents believe that the symbolic blue cheque could allow fake accounts to pretend to be influential or public figures spreading falsehoods.
