Encanto conjures $1.5 million at Tuesday Box Office

“Encanto,” Disney’s latest animated feature that boasts original music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, earned $1.5 million in its box office preview screenings Tuesday night ahead of a busy Thanksgiving weekend at the box office.

“Encanto” opens alongside MGM’s “House of Gucci,” starring Lady Gaga, and Sony/Screen Gems’ “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,”A reboot of the horror and video game action franchise. “Encanto”It has the potential to be the best-selling film at the box office with a 5-day opening of between $35-40 Million. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”It is also showing strong results for its second week in theatres, tracking at $30-35million in the holiday weekend.

“Encanto”Opening in the U.S.A and Canada on Wednesday at 3,980 theaters. This includes over 600 large format screens and 1,300 3-D locations. Stephanie Beatriz leads a voice cast that also includes María Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama, Adassa, Diane Guerrero, Mauro Castillo, Angie Cepeda, Jessica Darrow, Rhenzy Feliz, Carolina Gaitán, Ravi Cabot-Conyers and John Leguizamo. It ranks 94% in Rotten Tomatoes.

“House of Gucci”Close behind “Encanto” on Tuesday, bringing in $1.3 million in previews, and it’s projected to earn between $15-18 million over the 5-day weekend, an impressive and high bar when so many films for grown-ups have struggled to do much at the box office.

“House of Gucci”This is Ridley Scott’s latest film. Lady Gaga stars as Patrizia Regigiani, an Italian socialite. She married Maurizio Guicci and then conspired to murder him. Scott’s film also stars Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Salma Hayek, and the film has been polarizing among critics as either a love-it or hate-it spectacle, including a lot of discussion about some of the more eccentric performances from Gaga and Leto. It currently holds a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Finally, “Resident Evil: Raccoon City” is Constantin Films’ origin story based on the Capcom video game franchise and it brought in $935,000 in Tuesday preview screenings. The film will open in roughly 2,800 locations on Wednesday, and 2,352 locations opened on Tuesday. Preview screenings begin at 3 p.m. Studio estimates an $8-10 million opening against a $25,000,000 budget.

Johannes Roberts directs the rebooted film. It tells the story of a woman who investigates the Umbrella Corporation, a pharmaceutical company. The film focuses on how they transformed Raccoon City in Midwestern into a desolate wasteland. There is great evil lurking beneath the surface. Kaya Scodelario stars with Neal McDonough and Hannah John-Kamen.

Also opening this weekend but not in previews and in just four select locations on Friday is MGM and United Artists’ “Licorice Pizza,”Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film. It opens wide on Christmas Day.
