Mark your calendars, because this week, a **rare blue supermoon** is set to light up the night sky, appearing approximately seven times larger than usual! It’s an astronomical phenomenon that you won’t want to miss.
The breathtaking sights don’t stop there; get ready for **enhanced sunsets and sunrises** paired with the supermoon. Thanks to smoke wafting across the Atlantic from wildfires in North America, the sky will be transformed into an eye-catching canvas of colors.
The remnants of the wildfires have created a particularly red and “hazy” appearance in the sky, as noted by Sky News meteorologist Kirsty McCabe. “The **hazy skies** this weekend are due to smoke from Canadian wildfires being carried across the Atlantic. Luckily, the smoke particles are high in the atmosphere and won’t affect your health, but they will enhance the stunning sunsets and sunrises we’re seeing this weekend,” she remarked.
Expect to see these unusual hues again on Monday, but they might be swept away by the approaching Hurricane Ernesto, which is moving across the North Atlantic. While it poses no threat to the UK, it will bring “unseasonably wet and windy weather” next week, according to McCabe.
The **blue supermoon** will reach its peak brightness on Monday night (August 19) and into the early hours of Tuesday morning (August 20). It will shine against a backdrop of brilliant red during sunset, providing a stunning view.
According to NASA, the supermoon will appear full for three days, from Sunday morning through early Wednesday morning. So, whether you’re an avid moon gazer or just love a beautiful night sky, make sure to step outside!
The moon travels in an elliptical orbit around Earth. At various points in its orbit, it can appear closer or farther away from our planet. **Each month**, the moon goes through a point called **perigee**, where it’s closest to Earth, and another called **apogee**, where it’s furthest away. A **supermoon** occurs when a full moon coincides with its perigee, making it look especially large and bright.
The “blue” aspect of this **supermoon** refers to its occurrence as the second full moon within one calendar month. Since the moon’s cycle runs approximately 29.5 days, this phenomenon happens every two to three years, making it a rare treat!
For the best viewing experience, rural areas are your best bet. Choosing a spot with an **unobstructed view** of the horizon is crucial. Avoid places with tall trees or the clutter of cityscapes to truly enjoy this celestial display.
Lake District National Park – North West England
The Lake District is a favored UK holiday spot, characterized by mountain landscapes and picturesque lakes. Low levels of **light pollution** make it an excellent choice for spotting both shooting stars and supermoons, provided the night is lovely and clear.
Exmoor National Park – South West England
This park is recognized as Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve, offering some of the darkest skies in the country, ideal for spotting cosmic phenomena.
Snowdonia National Park – Wales
Home to the highest peak in Wales, Snowdonia spans about 18% of the country’s land area. Thanks to minimal light pollution, it’s famed for its stargazing opportunities.
Hampstead Heath and Observatory – London
Hampstead Heath, one of London’s highest points, offers some escape from urban light pollution while providing a clear view of the sky. The Hampstead Observatory is open to the public on Friday and Saturday nights from mid-September to mid-April, depending on weather conditions.
