Disney Plus could soon be able to get a less expensive ad supported subscription

Disney Plus costs $7.99 per month of $79.99 per year in the US, with Disney having raised the price by $1 about a year ago. That’s still a great price, considering the content you’re getting from the service. Disney Plus allows you to access all of the Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel movies and TV series in one location. Disney Plus subscribers can get a cheaper subscription by adding ads to their account.

The move isn’t official yet, but it might be in line with what some of Disney’s rivals are doing in the highly-competitive streaming space to lower costs for consumers.

Disney Plus is expanding

Disney announced it had more than 118 million Disney Plus subscribers worldwide in November, when it celebrated the service’s second anniversary. Disney Plus has now reached 130 million subscribers. The growth is remarkable, given that Disney Plus isn’t even available worldwide compared to Netflix.

Disney plans to increase that number by aiming to have between 230 million to 260 million customers paid by 2024. This might be possible by launching a Disney Plus subscription that is ad-supported at a lower price. But that’s just a rumor. Disney Plus is now available in more locations.

The company AnnouncementA massive expansion of Disney Plus will be taking place in January. Disney Plus will soon be available in 42 more countries in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Disney didn’t reveal pricing tiers and release dates for these markets. It is not clear if a lower-cost ad-based Disney Plus subscription will be made available in these new markets.

What is the cost of the Disney Plus subscription with ads?

According to InformationDisney is reportedly considering launching an ad supported version of Disney Plus in the US. This could allow Disney to sign up more customers for the service. The blog also noted that the US’ growth has slowed down.

It’s unclear how much the ad version of Disney Plus will cost or when the cheaper subscription will launch.

Disney competitors already offer US customers ad supported streaming subscriptions. This includes WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal and Discovery. Discovery Plus and Paramount Plus start at $4.99 as long as you don’t mind the ads. This seems to be the most reasonable price for a Disney Plus subscription. But that’s speculation at this time.

Hulu without ads is $6.99 per month. That’s another streaming service that Disney operates. Hulu can be bundled with Disney Plus and ESPN Plus, either with ads or without.

It seems clear that Disney requires subscriber growth in order to achieve its goals. This includes the cost of new content. Disney intends to spend $8 billion per annum on Disney Plus TV and movies by 2024.
