Americans have the opportunity to earn up to $10,000 simply by residing in a different location, as a southern state is actively recruiting workers to move and work remotely in a particular region. The initiative, known as Remote Shoals, aims to entice remote workers to the Shoals in Alabama, covering Colbert and Lauderdale counties – situated approximately two hours northwest of Birmingham.
The Remote Shoals program was initially launched in 2019 by the Shoals Economic Development Authority with the primary goal of enticing remote workers to live and work in the area. The region comprises the towns of Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, and Sheffield, offering a high quality of life and low cost of living compared to major metropolitan areas such as Nashville, Tennessee, or Atlanta, Georgia.
SEDA has described The Shoals as a region distinguished by its “space, pace, and community.” Prospective residents can find affordable housing options, a vibrant community comprising international students and other remote workers, as well as engaging cultural events like music and arts festivals.
Referred to as Alabama’s “best kept secret,” the region is renowned for its diverse dining options and southern comfort food establishments such as Stagg’s Grocery, Rivertown Coffee, and Trowbridge. Outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in various activities including hiking, water sports, fishing, and more around the rivers and lakes nearby.
The program offers compensation of up to $10,000 to interested workers relocating to the region, with the amount contingent upon their annual income. Eligibility criteria include being a US resident aged 18 or above residing outside of The Shoals, being self-employed or a full-time remote employee, and willing to move to the region within six months.
Financial incentives vary based on income, with the full $10,000 available to those earning $124,800 or more annually. Selected participants receive the amount in installments, with 25% upfront, another 25% after six months of residency, and the remaining 50% after completing a year.
For the full list of regions in the US offering relocation incentives and specific details, individuals can visit the Remote Shoals program website. As of February 2022, the program successfully attracted 50 individuals to relocate, with renewed funding for additional rounds. Interested candidates can submit applications starting from May 1 in the subsequent rounds.
